"Well, if Merrily counts as a failed show"
It ran 16 performances.
How could it be counted otherwise?

"I'm not counting shows that may be technical flops because they failed to recoup (RAGTIME, anything by Sondheim), but are well-known and often-revived and highly regarded classics.) "
Love how some people make up their own definitions and play fast and loose with the truth to suit their own agendas. How very post modern!
As if Anyone Can Whistle, Pacific Overtures, Merrily We Roll Along, The Frogs, Passion, Road Show, etc. are all "highly regarded classics."

Kind of surprised no one's mentioned HIGH FIDELITY here yet. "Laura, Laura" is a beautiful ballad to me, "The Last Real Record Store on Earth" one of my favorite scene-setting opening numbers and "Nine Percent Chance" just a fantastic rallying act break.
I'll also go to SMILE for a few songs. I personally love Robin's letter home during "There Goes the Girl/Finale," one of my favorite climactic reprises/emotional swells in a show few people know. And "Until Tomorrow Night" is a pretty dynamite anxiety-riddled button into intermission.

The Wild Party (LaChiusa): Dry, Welcome to My Party, Moving Uptown
The Frogs: Ariadne, Fear No More
Greenwillow: Never Will I Marry
The Grass Harp: Yellow Drum, If There's Love Enough (I have a surprising number of contralto students right now and I love playing Carol Brice's songs from this show for them)
Young Frankenstein: Roll in the Hay, Transylvania Mania
The Addams Family: Grandma's Song (because Jackie Hoffman's video blogs were the only good thing to come out of that show)

That was my initial thought, but since the show is so highly regarded and to this day still continues to be a favorite among devoted theater fans, some will argue it's a classic.

"That was my initial thought, but since the show is so highly regarded and to this day still continues to be a favorite among devoted theater fans,"
I know many devoted theatre fans, and I include myself among them. The show in question is certainly no favorite of theirs, or mine. And even if it were, it was still a flop, just like other flops that some theatregoers loved, eg, Side Show, Scottsboro Boys, Hands on a Hardbody, Follies, etc.
"some will argue it's a classic."
The only ones would would argue that --- and they don't argue, they decree-- are the Sondheim fanatics on Broadway World.
But now, to dispense with all this unpleasantness, and return to the subject of this thread, I'll add a few more gems from flops:
"Dear Friend" from Tenderloin. (Actually, the entire score of Tenderloin).
"When You're Far Away from New York Town" from Jennie. (Wonderfully staged)
"Where Shall I Find Find Him?" from Sail Away.
"The Nicest Thing" from Let It Ride!
"I've Been Invited to a Party" from The Girl Who Came to Supper.
