Final performance of Rent to be shown in movie theaters

Hm, I think this will be kind of detrimental to broadway sales to some extent.
Except there aren't tickets on sale for the final performance, so there are no sales to hurt.
I frankly couldn't care less...I'm letting the time I saw it this past August with Adam and Anthony be my last time seeing it. But if tickets aren't even on sale to the general public, the sale of them can't really be hurt.
LIVE THAT LESSON!!!!!!

"Hm, I think this will be kind of detrimental to broadway sales to some extent."
Rent won't have Broadway sales after this performance, and the tour is going to be a box office bonanza no matter what, because of the presence of Rapp and Pascal.
I would assume, however, that the only shows to air like this would be closing performances, or shows that would air after they've closed (the way Great Performances, Live From Lincoln Center, etc. does it).

Posted: 5/22/08 at 7:12amPerformances from the Metropolitan Opera are shown at movie theatres around the country, as are some hockey games (in Canada, at least), so I think this is a good way to promote Broadway to people in other parts of the country. I wouldn't be surprised to see shows like the Academy Awards or the Tonys simulcast in movie theatres, as people might like to see shows like that with a crowd (and movie theatres are trying to find ways to make themselves more relevent in the age of the DVD and video downloads).

Posted: 5/22/08 at 12:53pmI'm assuming this will be similar (or identical) to the metropolitan opera simulcasts that take place now. An excellent idea- but tickets are a lot more than $10.50. I think the Opera tickets are $25.

The Met Opera broadcasts are shown on PBS (about a month after their theatrical showings) and then released on DVD. So, it is possible.
Sony Pictures to Release ‘Rent’

The Broadway production of “Rent” is headed to movie theaters. The final performance of the rock musical, which exits Broadway on Sept. 7 after 12 years, will be exhibited nationwide as part of a new business from Sony Pictures. The movie studio said on Wednesday that it would bring music concerts, stage shows and sporting events to multiplexes. Another early offering will be “Delirium,” a Cirque du Soleil show touring Europe. Exact dates for the limited engagements are still undecided.
Programming theaters with nonmovie content has
been gaining steam as multiplex owners seek ways to attract new
ticket buyers. Sony is the first big studio to dip its toe into the arena, which until now has been left to niche players like Colorado-based Fathom Events, which simulcasts from the Metropolitan Opera.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

Posted: 5/22/08 at 3:26pmI never understand the logic of filmed versions of shows being detrimental to ticket sales. It's like advertising Are you more likely to want to shell out to see an artist in concert before or after you've listened to their CD?

Even the producers of RENT said the film version actually increased ticket sales for the show significantly, and that the film was practically a long ad for the broadway show. I remember that because The Phantom of the Opera also saw a large increase in ticket sales with its film version, but The Producers saw a decrease.

I'll be interested to learn how the film crew copes with ambient noise.
I mean, with all of the stories about how crazy the final Groff, Michele showing of SP was, and how the screams rocked the very foundations of the earth, one has to wonder whether or not the crazed responses of those die hard rent fans will cause any dip in the quality of this recording.
I can't imagine that a pre-show announcement asking for no verbalization except at the end of numbers would go over well. lol.
Though, I guess it could add an edgy "live" quality to the whole thing, too.
