Can you say this is your favorite musical of all time?
While I always hate to say my favorite show was one of the last shows I have seen, I can't think of another musical or live performance that I have enjoyed more. I don't think I laughed more in a 2.5 hour period ever before. It is definitely an original.
I purchased the soundtrack, and it is hard to stop listening to it.
Sorry for starting another BOM thread...I am sure we needed another one.
My favorite currently running show. ONE of my favorite comedies.
My favorite of all time? Not even close. Not even my favorite of last season.
While I wouldn't say it's my #1 of all time, I definitely think MORMON is the best new musical in many years. I'd put it alongside other favorites of the past decade or two like CAROLINE OR CHANGE, PARADE, AVENUE Q, and HAIRSPRAY without question. Three reasons off the top of my head:
1) its ability to articulate weighty, perhaps controversial ideas within the framework of traditionally structured musical comedy
2) complete mastery of tone - its vulgarity is good-natured and appropriate, and the show never feels obscene or (on the opposite end of the spectrum) too "soft"
3) seamless relationship between book and music/lyrics - for example, I love the scores to SPRING AWAKENING and THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA but find their books lacking. MORMON is a triple threat in this regard as far as I'm concerned
I love it, and it's my favorite currently running show, but it still places third in my favorite shows after RAGTIME and GYPSY.
I purchased the soundtrack, and it is hard to stop listening to it.
Soundtrack? You mean there's already a film version of THE BOOK OF MORMON? Did I miss something? I mean... the musical just opened on Broadway a few months ago.
I guess I need to add this soundtrack recording to my collection which already includes the Original Broadway Cast Recording.
I guess you missed it. It is being released as a movie this fall.
You know what, I think I would say it is my favourite show I have seen. I have never left a theatre feeling as good as I felt after leaving Mormon. I literally felt on top of the world and was completely buzzing!! I can't wait to see it again.
ABB2357 summed up my feelings on this very well. Book of Mormon isn't my favorite musical ever, but I admire how the knowledge and love of musical theater shines through in every element. The show has an abundance of heart and humor and community. It deserves every accolade it's gotten and probably more.
WHAT IS WITH ALL YOU PEOPLE SAYING "SOUNDTRACK"?!
Stop it!
The commercials that helped it become the number one album in America called it a soundtrack. I remember you all clutching your pearls back then, too. Most people use the terms interchangeably. Only the die-hards need smelling salts when someone doesn't say [insert signifier] Cast Recording.
