Just posing some lazy saturday "dream casting" suggestions. I know it's a great movie and there will be plenty of naysayers to crap all over this thread. It's not happening, but I'd love to see this story SING.
Fried Green Tomatoes
a new musical
Evelyn Couch Delta Burke
Mrs. Threadgoode Angela Lansbury
Idgie Threadgoode Kelly O’Hara
Ruth Jamison Tammy Blanchard
Frank Bennett Marc Kudisch
Buddy Derek Keeling
Ed Couch Ernie Sabella
*I should point out, I DID do a search on this and found a couple of related threads. They're old and I'm not going to revive them. Problem? Tough. *
Kelli O'Hara is entirely too feminine to play Idgie.
It's called ACTING dear.
Yes, darling, but sometimes people just don't come off a certain way, sweetie pie. For instance, Kelli O'Hara simply was not convincing as a street urchin in My Fair Lady, while she made a lovely Act 2 Eliza, sugar lips lumpkin babykins.

I LOVE LOVE Fried Green Tomatoes as a movie, but I just don't see it as a musical. A PLAY? perhaps. That might actually be pretty darn awesome, but musical, nah. I think adding musical numbers would take away from the beauty of the piece itself :)

Yeah I don't know about putting music to certain scenes of the movie:
Song titles from "Fried Green Tomatoes, The Musical"
*When Buddy Jr. loses his arm: "It's all fun and games 'til someone loses an arm"
*When Sipsey hits Frank Bennett over the head with a skillet: "My name is Sipsey BITCH!"
*When Goerge is outside "grilling": "Slap another RIB on them coals"
Old article...but it was in the works to come to Broadway as a play at one point.
Stage Version of Fannie Flagg's "Fried Green Tomatoes" Is Broadway-Bound; Producer Seeks Playwright
killertofu333, the composers of THE COLOR PURPLE turned tragic moments into memorable, affecting music.
I'm sure the same could be done for FRIED GREEN TOMATOES.
I think it would be excellent material for a musical, but why do it as a play?
There is a certain amount of frustration on the West End board at the moment that the current stage adaption of the Calendar Girls film is a play rather than a musical, when it is such good source material for a musical.
