When I saw Angels in America: Perestroika a few years back, the nurses/stagehands wheeled Nathan Lane onstage in his hospital bed but forgot to lock the wheels in place so the whole bed started rolling towards the edge of the stage right before two cast members grabbed it and averted disaster. After the bed was actually locked into place, Lane made a comment along the lines of "I knew I should've gone to Mount Sinai instead..." and the crowd went UP

Last weekend I closed Rocky Horror as the Narrator. During the infidelity monologue, I typically made a side joke about Jada Pinkett, which always got the audience going "ooooh." If they responded well to it, I'd often say "Wow, that one really touched a nerve for you, didn't it? Should I be worried? Is Will Smith in the audience tonight?"

Well, at the second to last performance, the moment I say Will Smith, somebody from the back of the house yells "GET MY WIFE'S NAME OUT YA F***IN' MOUTH!" And just like that, a lanky black man with a crew cut is rushing the stage... but it turns out to be one of our past Franks, who heard me do the bit and decided to add his own response to it. The audience went nuts and I could barely keep it together to finish the scene. I couldn't have planned it better if I tried.

I was at Roger Bart's final night as Doc Brown in Back To The Future in London and the atmosphere was electric.  During Put Your Mind To It, Oliver Nicholas as George McFly suddenly shouts "I wanna be just like Roger Bart!"  Those of us who knew he was leaving enjoyed that immensely. 😊

I don't know if either of these were actually ad libs but I'm pretty sure they were and they were very funny

Christian Borle having a little interaction with quill in Something Rotten where it calls him a fraud

Harvey Fierstein in Hairspray at the Hollywood Bowl saying "This can all be yours if the price is right" near the end of Timeless to Me (there were only three performances of that so I don't know if that even counts but um)

Kristen Chenoweth's last performance of Popular sprinkled with so much meta tongue and cheek stuff is pretty legendary and wonderful

Alex M said: "Now that Spamalot is back, I thought it might be a good time to revive this thread. A lot of different ad-libs happened during the opening preview. Some notable ones were Taran Killam, as the main Night of Ni, saying that they are now the knights who say: *proceeds to do the full ending of the song 'Thriller' with the rest of the knights dancing behind him*. Leslie Kritzer told the audience that Santa wasn't real out of nowhere, which elicited a mixed reaction of laughs and boos. Also, Taran Killam as 'Tim' made a very funny comment that I can't quite remember about how ridiculous the knight whose head got torn off by the killer rabbit looked. It seemed as though Nik Walker was having a hard time getting through the scene because of whatever he had said."

The one ad-lib from that (k)night that had me rolling the most was when the Knight of Ni were satisfied and then Killam says "We're going to Gramercy to trick or treat at Neil Patrick Harris' house. I heard he gives out artisanal chocolate and homemade soap" and the other knights were chanting "Neil Patrick Harris" as they headed offstage

"Wouldn't call it "unfortgettable" but at Gutenberg! the other night the audience started clapping when Gad was helped off the ground during one scene. He kind of chuckled and said it was sad that people clapped for him just getting off the ground, and Rannells added "and not even alone! He needed help!""

Oddly enough, I was also at this performance too. At the end, when they are dreaming of their opening night, before Betty Who came out at the producer, Josh Gad on made a crack about how on their opening night, "people's cell phone alarms won't go off for a minute straight" and the audience roared - since during their quieter moment near the end, there was an audible iPhone alarm going off for what felt like FOREVER. They also ad-libbed and kept calling back to a woman in the audience who apparently brought in a whole plate of food (near the front of the orchestra) and was eating during the show.
