re: Future mamma Roses...

I stand by my Mary Testa dream. I'd love to see her take on the role.

I concur with Seth Rudetsky's assessment after he saw Emily Skinner's cabaret. In a few more years she would be AMAHZING!

Mery Testa, I already have a vision of her in my head.

I'd love to see what Beth Leavel would bring to the role. Within the next five years.

I would LOVE to see Carolee Carmello tackle Rose. Not necessarily in 15+ years, though. She'd be fantastic now, or in the near future.

And another YES to Mary Testa.

re: Future mamma Roses...

The next GYPSY revival belongs to one and only Donna Murphy.
If Papermill does it anytime soon, Mary Testa would be a divine choice. And actually I would love to see her as Momma Rose on Broadway, I just would like to see Murphy over Testa.
Tonya Pinkins would also make a brilliant Rose, her "Rose's Turn" would be perfection.
I can perhaps see Audra McDonald having a go at it, but just like some thought Peters was miscast as Rose, I think that McDonald would be awfully miscast as Rose. Actually, I don't see her in the role at all to be honest, and that's nothing against her great acting/singing skills.

re: Future mamma Roses...

I'm trying to remember, but I'm pretty sure they never call her "Mamma Rose" or even "Mama Rose".

I agree with Murphy. I'd pass out from that performance.

Um, maybe more quickly than 15-30 years but I think Linda Hart would be great.

I'm super on board with Mary Testa and Beth Leavel.

ray-andallthatjazz86, now that I think of it, I can see how McDonald might be miscast. Her voice has such beauty and innate elegance.. it might not suit the role.

Still at least with McDonald we won't get a performance that bends the role to fit her personality, or panders to a sycophantic fanbase.

She's a tad too old, but Michele Lee would have been a knock out Rose. Did she ever play it in stock?

re: Future mamma Roses...

Oh, I would kill to see a Tonya Pinkins/ Anika Noni Rose production of GYPSY.

Although, color blind casting may not work for this show.

But, wow, that would be phenomenal.

Or even Beyonce, instead of Anika Noni Rose. She could dominate as Louise.

re: Future mamma Roses...

Audra would be terribly miscast. She does not have a belt; she's a true soprano through and through.
Linda Hart doesn't have the - well, heart for it.

And considering we only waited four years for another production after 2003, Mary CHESTa could do it and kill it in, say, 5-10 years.

Audra would have been a sublime Louise some years ago.
