You realize Murphy would always be a no show. That production would fail in a month.
I agree, I'd love to see Peters pull a Channing and come back to revise her own performance. Maybe not 30 years tho..
I agree. Skinner would be great.
Tho I have to say...the one person I'd LOVE to see take the stage......MERYL STREEP (again, way too old in 30 years). But there's not a lot of power house performers these days. They have too many Broadway sweeties nowadays

I'm trying to remember, but I'm pretty sure they never call her "Mamma Rose" or even "Mama Rose".
... if you ask the man who created her — playwright Arthur Laurents — to talk about Mama Rose, the first thing he does is correct you. It's Madame Rose, not Mama Rose.

I'm all for color blind casting in terms of fictional characters. However, these people actually lived. There are interviews with Gypsy out there, as well as June. They weren't African American, and it's not a bad thing to NOT cast African Americans. And to even mention Beyonce's name...please, please, please. Never in a million years.

NuggetMonkeys,
What makes you say she doesn't have the heart for it?

GYPSY is such a fictional account about Rose Havoc and Gypsy Rose Lee's relationship that I don't see there is any problem whatsoever in having African-Americans, Asians, Latinos, Middle-Easterns, or whoever feels like playing those wonderful roles as long as they have a good grasp on the roles and have the talent to pull them off.
Teaming up Tonya Pinkins and Anika Noni Rose for a "color-blind" GYPSY would just be wonderful.
And NYC_or_Bust, shut it already about Donna Murphy, it's tacky.

When I think of people who get me going as Rose, it's people who have an uncontrollable amount of ferocious warmth, depth, and power.
I don't personally connect with Linda Hart in that way.

Posted: 7/9/08 at 1:19amI'm sure the nice ensemble of Wonderful Town used the same words "Donna Murphy" and "tacky" in the same sentence a lot, jazz.

I'd love to see Laura Benanti come full circle (Judy Kuhn in Les Miz style) in 20-30 years...

I'd LOVE to see Sutton Foster tackle this role!!
Also, I think Beth Leavel would be amazing!
Maybe Mara Davi? She certainly has the voice for it.

I'd like to see Christine Ebersole take on the role...
Mary Testa would be phenominal! And I think that in a number of years Julia Murney would be awesome as Mama Rose.

For some reason, Ebersole just doesn't strike me as a Madame Rose.
I just can't imagine what lady will get to play it next- and how she'll be received. Patti is a hard act to follow.
But I'd love to see a Pinkins/ Rose revival and I don't care if it's in two years. It would be spectacular. Just keep Debbie Allen away.
And as for for Beyonce- I don't find that as such a stupid idea. Beyonce's got the voice. She's got the body. She can do sheepish, as we all saw in "Dreamgirls." And she can most definitely do sexy.

Donna Murphy

Posted: 7/9/08 at 8:38pmI'm sort of thinking Sara Ramirez. Or is that a really dumb idea?

#47re: Future mamma Roses...
Posted: 7/9/08 at 8:50pmDonna Murphy amd Tonya Pinkins would be perfect! Hamds down. I can't see Ebersole, Leavel or Foster at all!

Posted: 7/10/08 at 7:28amIn about 15 years I think Tammy Blanchard should come full circle and play Rose. With her fabulous voice and incredible acting skills, Blanchard would be the closest thing to how one would have imagined Judy Garland could have played and sung Madame Rose. Tammy Blanchard has the potential to be the 2nd greatest Rose after Ethel Merman on stage in the future.
