I had a feeling they'd use the "scrumptious eye-candy" quote from the NYT review as I read it even though it really says nothing about the material or the performers.
"Can we stop the abbreviations? Every time someone refers to ON THE TOWN as OTT, I think of a otter. And OTTC is just confusing. It sounds liker some sort of bank."
It will be so confusing when GRACE IS GOING INSANE opens...
"Run, don't walk to Gigi! And bring your helicopter parent!"
I kind of thought that this production was going to be politely received (ala DO I HEAR A WALTZ?), but I guess I was wrong. Has there been a revival in recent years that got panned this badly? The misguided 2009 revival of GUYS AND DOLLS comes to my mind.
^Let's see, we've had...
Bye Bye Birdie
Promises, Promises
Godspell
On a Clear Day You Can See Forever
Jekyll & Hyde
I like Borstal's. Nails it.
"A musical as sparkling and delightful as its very not hooker-y heroine, Gigi is Broadway at its most inoffensive!"

Annie and Jekyll and Hyde?
I like the headline from the original NYT review from the 70's: "Gigi is Here Again As a Stage Musical"

All I can say is that the critics were right about this one. A perfectly pointless evening in the theater. Flabbily directed -- with one of the most egregiously awful ensembles in memory; the schmacting was beyond belief -- indifferently performed, with the exception of Victoria Clark. The "new" material is sub par Lerner and Loewe, to say the least. The one saving grace is the design, which is quite lovely. An enormous "who cares?"

I did not expect David Cote to hold back on NY1's On Stage and he didn't disappoint. Somehow it feels rougher to hear the words spoken instead of just reading them.
Although not a ton of dates on TDF, watch for it. Just snagged a pair on an unnamed papering service for under $ 10 plus the $ 2.00 facility fee. Tickets are gone now
This show is destined for oblivion, sooner rather than later, when this happens. I expected this with the scathing reviews it got.

Shoddily revised book and disappointing orchestrations aside, I feel bad. The production is decidely better than the reviews would indicate. Knives were out.
The severity of the negative reviews has started to sink in
A day or so ago, Gigi was on TDF for 1 date. Today, it was on for a dozen.
With all the attention AAIP is getting as the far better show...I believe GIGI will slowly fade and only pick up 2>3 nominations on the 28th.... Victoria Clark for Best Featured Actress in a Musical and possibly Lighting Design or most likely Costume Design for Catherine Zuber.

Featured actress is jammed with possible nominees - doubtful if they will waste a slot on Gigi.
This may be a future Jeopardy question
What 3 MGM musicals wound up on Broadway in the same season?
Answer: AAIP/Gigi/OTT
Saw the Gigi commercial on TV today and my favorite use/twist of a pull quote:
On the screen it read: "A cast of theatre pros" (AM New York) ... Which, I understand the meaning behind calling someone a "pro" but essentially isn't that all professional actors?
The concurrent voice over said "With a cast of Broadway royalty" And of course there are some very accomplished actors in that cast but I just found it funny to say that on the voiceover when that's clearly not what they have written on the screen.
Not the train wreck described by the critics
It was an entertaining show but no idea why they decided it needed a revival after it previously flopped. It is all based on her drawing power which, unfortunately, will not be enough to save it. For the record, the 11 piece orchestra sounded great.
This definitely faces an uphill battle. It just opened and already on TDF for 14 dates.

"For the record," the "orchestra" (i.e. "band") sounds thin and cheap.
