Can't wait to see this production next month! (:
I read that there is an official "Gypsy" website up & running? I've searched for it on a few different search engines and can't find it?? Is there one, and if so, what is the link to it?? thanks
enjoy

I'm a little late (I was on vacation with very little computer access) but I'm so glad that Gypsy got such phenomenal reviews! Can't wait to see it!
Ditto, courtnyj! It's kind of blissful, isn't it? =)
Okay, now I loved this production but this guy-
Oops, ljay already added it.
Well, here's a quote:
"Wow. Wow. Wow. The Broadway revival of Gypsy, starring the astonishing Patti LuPone, has now arrived at the—wow—at the St. James Theatre, and from the moment the—wow. Sorry, but: wow. There are times when a critic can calmly analyze the assets and demerits of a production; and there are other times, thrilling and rare, when a show slaps the sense clean out of him, and when the proper reaction is awe, delight and gratitude. This Gypsy is a stunner: an achievement that no one who loves musicals, no one who loves theater, no one at all should miss."

It looks like he was really awestrucked. I'm also a little late here but i gotta say... HHHOOOOORRRRRRRAAAAAYYYYYYYY FOR PATTI!!!! I really hopes she gets the Tony this year, even with the (in my opinion) stiff competition.

I do too! But I think, as of now, her only real competitor is Jenna Russell, who didn't even get these kind of reviews! The only way Faith Prince stands a chance is if she and A Catered Affair receive stellar reviews, or if Patti and Jenna divide the votes.

I loved the "wow" review. Gave me a nice chuckle, and reminded me of how I felt after the first time I saw the show.

That is true. I really really really want it to go to Patti but I wouldn't be too upset if Jenna got it. Just about 90% upset. Unless by some miraculous happening it ends up as tie (which would be fantastic with me), but the odds of that are pretty slim.
Watch the video clip of the end of "Everything's Coming Up Roses," and watch Louise and Herbie's reactions in the background. The look of terror on their faces is amazing, so great.

Oh, thank the lord for these reviews. This show and this cast fully deserve it.

In black-and-white like that, it looks like a movie still from a 1940s Hollywood movie.
Agreed, PJ. It really does, very beautiful!
That photo is absolutely stunning. I love it.

A positive review from LA Times, raving about Patti.
Patti LuPone's up-and-down career couldn't have prepared her better for the role of Momma Rose in the new Broadway production of "Gypsy." In some way the casting was inevitable. But with so many illustrious predecessors, who could have imagined the result would be so breathtakingly one-of-a-kind?
.
.
LuPone doesn't offer a fresh psychological diagnosis of the archetypal stage mother except to reveal her first and foremost as a creature hard-wired for applause. Deprived of an audience, she's perpetually on the hunt for the spotlight, even if it's ostensibly meant for her performing-seal daughters.
.
.
The production, which opened Thursday at the St. James Theatre under the direction of Arthur Laurents, the book's estimable super-senior author, isn't perfect. Occasionally, when the cast members (top-notch where it matters most) aren't performing Jerome Robbins' glorious choreography (reproduced by Bonnie Walker), the staging resembles a concert version in which they've been asked to arrange their own blocking.
I know this isn't about Gypsy reviews (which I'm so glad were phenomenal) but I didn't feel right about starting another Gypsy thread...
For those of you who have seen the show. I seem to remember a point where the curtain in front of the orchestra rises during one of the numbers ... I'm thinking it was "All I need is the Girl."
I'm trying to write a paper on the production and can't quite remember if I'm remembering correctly. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
The New Yorker's John Lahr on Patti:
====
Now it’s the balky, beaky Patti LuPone who makes Momma Rose’s first entrance, up the aisle and onto the stage. “Sing out, Louise—sing out!” she shouts to her elder daughter during an audition, intrusiveness being her art form. LuPone is rambunctious and rebarbative. Thrilling from the moment she stalks onstage, the big-voiced and big-hearted LuPone plays Momma Rose more as a terrier than as a bitch—snapping, snarling, gnawing fiercely on the bone of opportunity. LuPone, a pint-size powerhouse, has a low center of gravity. She’s built like a pulling guard, stocky, with good legs and speed; nothing seems to knock her off balance or off course. Underneath a crop of curly copper hair, energy and exhaustion compete in her weathered face. As if to underline her character’s unabashed ferocity and vulgarity, LuPone’s mouth is a gash of red. Whether Rose is showing her erstwhile suitor Herbie (the appealing Boyd Gaines) some leg, plying a manager of the Orpheum Circuit with Chinese food, or tiptoeing upstage to shift the scenery while her kid act, starring Baby June, is in full swing, LuPone is a delusional whirlwind whose innate humor manages to humanize the toxic termagant. Momma Rose sees her children as extensions of herself; she is the kind of narcissistic mother who is always there when she needs you. LuPone’s Rose may not be more terrifying than Merman’s but she’s more astute, more believably seductive and strategic.

OK----You win! I fought going to see this production because I've seen different Gypsy versions---on Broadway, movies, TV, etc. I felt---no more! But----after reading all of these amazing reviews of Patti and Laura----I bought tickets for June.
My question is-----How is Patti's attendance record? I really want to see her-----

I saw the show on Saturday night and all I can is - WOW WOW WOW!
In 30+ years of theatregoing, I have yet to see a better musical theatre production. Not only is Patti the definitive answer to Merman as Madame Rose, but the production is out of this world- even Laura Benanti whose acting I've never cared for is amazing in this and will earn a well deserved Tony nomination. Patti needs to start rehearsing her Tony acceptance speech because she's a shoo-in. Boyd Gaines will also get nominated and this will trump Sunday for Best Revival - as much as I loved Sunday, this production is too good to be true!

Two possible captions for the picture.
1. Laura: I don't like Patti's deadly silence. Guess, she isn't happy I got a better review than her in New York.
2. Laura: Oh, no! Patti didn't win the Tony and has turned to stone.
