I think Bloomsberg's review is exactly how I feel. The performances are flawless, but the production itself is not... I think his comments on the lamb, scenery and orchestra behind the scrim are dead-on.
Anyway, congrats to the cast!

Perhaps true about the sets, lamb, etc. but I wasn't paying attention to anything other than the actors and their fabulous performances!

The dog was more laughable than the lamb. How hard would it have been to get a little dog to hold for a few minutes?

I don't see why the dog is such a big deal. It's in the show for like, what, a total of two minutes? Who cares if it's real or not - it really dosen't matter.
The lamb, on the other hand, is just poorly executed I think. I understand the logic behind having it be a stuffed puppet versus a real lamb, but it dosen't translate well.

Agreed, Andrew.
The lamb man is just plain creepy. Otherwise it was fine during LITTLE LAMB.

Yeah. I mean, don't get me wrong, I don't think the lamb is done well at all, but in the grand scheme of things, I just don't think it makes that big of a difference. I'll never understand why people make such a big deal over it.

I have a terrible habit of just making things up, but I swear I heard somewhere that Patti roughhoused with the dog at Ravinia and got yelled at.
...is that even close to being true?

When I see the phrase "the ____ estate", I imagine a vast mansion in the country full of monocled men and high-collared women receiving letters about productions across the country and doing spit-takes at whatever they contain.

^ careful...
I'm loving reading these reviews. I've never seen Gypsy on stage, and April 26th can't come quickly enough!

Are videos of curtain call kosher to post? Or do they fall under the "bootleg" category? If they're okay to post, I've got one of Patti's bow, and will have more. My fabulous friend filmed them!

It's a pity is there is any animosity between Patti and Bernadette.
I wonder if they will tape this production. Didn't Laurents block a recording of the last one?

You're right, antiandrewx. I didn't see one of yours.
However, I think posting any sort of video taken of a show is a no-no.

Uh, that's a pretty iconic line to misquote.
"And yet ... 'Gypsy' makes a visceral connection to all our mothers who were 'born too early and started too late.' "

There's Miss Patti's bow. There'll be two more videos; just check under the username tomorrow morning and they'll all be up. Appologies for the shakiness!

Just got back.
Simply wonderful.
The entire cast is magnificent.
I really think this is Benanti's year. I've known she had it in her for years and I'm overjoyed to see others finally recognize her immense talent.
What a wonderful evening.

Who wouldn't be shaky, antiandrew?
"I mean, sitting side by side with another man watching Patti LuPone play Rose in GYPSY on Broadway is essentially the equivalent of having hardcore sex." -Wanna Be A Foster.
"Say 'Goody.' Say 'Bubbi.'" ... "That's it. Exactly as if it were 'Goody.' Now I know you're gonna sing 'Goody' this time, but nevertheless..."

Barnes is up. BIG RAVES for LuPone and Benanti.
http://www.nypost.com/seven/03282008/entertainment/theater/everythings_bright_lights_and_lollipops_103807.htm
There have been a procession of remarkable Roses - from Ethel Merman through Angela Lansbury, Tyne Daly, Betty Buckley and Bernadette Peters.
Of them all, LuPone most closely resembles Merman, but she's still her own woman and her own Rose, the archetypal shrew of a showbiz mother.
Benanti is terrific, handling that transformation with more skill than any Louise I've seen, and standing toe-to-toe with LuPone in one of drama's most effective shouting matches.
