Posted: 4/25/10 at 10:42pmYes, give the Tony to Sean Hayes. Bravo! A performance well done! Wake up people! Sean Hayes is simply more than just Jack McFarland. People choose to be blindsighted to not have the ability and mental sense to know these things for themselves. Very negative posters here on the board and maybe alot of jealous ones too.

Posted: 4/25/10 at 10:59pmAs much as I enjoyed Jerry Orbach's performances, I must say it is nice to hear the harmonies they way they were intended (the little I heard on the promo video). Orbach was pitchy on the orginal cast recording of FANTASTICKS, CHICAGO and PROMISES, PROMISES. I really hope there is a cast recording of this revival.

we saw the show sat. evening, 4/24, also and LOVED it. sean hayes was superb...witty, charming, lovely voice, a marvelous energy. he completely engaged and captivated that HUGE house, especially with his 4th wall monologues. that house is a mammoth barn, and he drew everyone in. u could hear a PIN drop. the leadsa were marvelous, the ensemble rocked, orchestra, sets, costumes, wig design - all the elements were spot ON. this cast danced their asses off!
we just read ben brantley's review and we disagree with his negative review.
again, to each his/her own, and a critic's review is merely one person's opinion. hopefully, this show, due to the star power, will also be critic-proof and enjoy a long, healthy run. sorry, ben, but i believe MANY of us disagree with you and thought this production was utterly sublime.

Very nice to hear from Virgil and others who also enjoyed Promises, Promises and Sean Hayes, and those who also feel that there is a negative clique here whose members think they own these boards.
But Virgil, you know you've offended one of those nasty writers by using that terrible cliche "spot on." My crime was to say "pitch perfect." Let me say that I found your review both spot on and pitch perfect! :)

Count me as another person who enjoyed it. I saw the show last week with a friend and we both really had a great time. Sean was charming and funny. I am a big fan of Kristin's and though I did enjoy her in this, I did feel it was not the right role for her. She seems much more comfortable and really shines in a role which allows her to be over the top. It would have been interesting to see her as Marge.
My biggest and shallowest complaint is the horrible wig! What are they thinking? If they want her to look younger they should have given her a decent do!
Overall a fun night out for us. I don't care about critics since I usually don't like what they like. Planning to go again in June with a niece.

thanks pacific! yes, we had a simply wonderful time. i read an article awhile back in the ny times that discussed how chenowith was choosing her next project and was torn between PROMISES and an original musical, a small piece set in france or something. she was approached by the creators of the "french piece", and was tempted. then she was approached by the PROMISES people. eventually opted for PROMISES for quite a few reasons (the score, the actors and staff, etc.). one of the reasons was also that the producers had as part of their "package offer" to her that they planned to film PROMISES for a tv movie after the NY run ends. so, like many performers, chenowith probably also felt there would be a bigger visibility/financial payoff with PROMISES.
in any case, i went in knowing the piece and score and was not disappointed. i was not personally bewitched by the Turkey Lurkey choreography, but that is a minor quibble.

In New York this week I had the amazing pleasure of seeing Promises Promises
and also that dinner theatre production of la Cage Aus Folles masquerading as a Broadway Show.
Promises was stellar!!!!!
Sean Hayes was charming, funny, masculine and carried Promises Promises beyond my expectations. The production was stellar, Chenowith in great voice and the entire experience was Broadway is all about. Kudos to all concerned.
Ben Brantley- please retire him. He suggested I sit through Next Fall (yawn- I fell asleep) LA Cage (I was appalled at this revival and not in a good way.
He told me Memphis was awful and Memphis Rocks! Sean Hayes only competition in my book is Chad Kimball from Memphis. I loved both of these performers.
As to Douglas Hodge in La Cage. I found him mincing, annoying, shticky and I did not believe his Albin for one second. The nicest thing I can say about his is that he looked good as mother. He was not up to par as George Hearn or Keene Curtis whom I both saw perform the role.
The dance numbers by the Cagelles are shamelessly bad compared to the original.
Where is the tap number? Cut.
And it seemed like there were only 7 musicians. The music seemed very very thin.
For $132, there should be a full orchestra. No.
So to be brief--in my book and this is my opinion the Tony should go to
Sean Hayes or Chad Kimball.

Posted: 4/30/10 at 9:55amWell goldenboy, I am apalled (the good way) that you think Sean Hayes' only competition is Chad Kimball.

"If you take a look at the Tony winnners over the past ten years, you'll see that the majority of winners were not the gang you cited. Deplorably, Raul, Cheyenne and Brian have NEVER won despite having collectively produced a fantastic body of work."
- i was thinking the same of that post, but then thought it was more about nominees. blaxx pointed out Cheyenne has never been nominated. it made no sense. i don't think the nominees have all been the same either.
Roscoe- We went through this on another thread and I think your points are spot on as much as i don't want to admit it fully
Is there any remote possibility Sean is trying to make the character different? (big stretch) From the main consensus i suspect not. It saddens me, because I really really like Sean and don't see like you do, that he is being "Jack" but that is just me. He may be nominated. I remember on "chat" last year during the Tony's and the backlash and chatting mayhem that took place over Billy Elliot and the score, amongst other stuff and I suspect it will be the same this year over Promises.

I saw Promises, Promises this afternoon (05/01) and I thought Sean Hayes was amazing/hilarious! He deserves a Tony nomination. His acting does remind us very well of Jack McFarland but it was funny nonetheless.
Watching ALNM and TAF this week and wanna see if Sean has real competition there besides the men from LCAF.
Btw, loved loved loved Kristin's performance. Sean did have control of the spoken, unsung parts of the show but everybody loved every musical performance by Kristin.

Posted: 5/2/10 at 1:59amI thought Sean Hayes was ok. He had some nice moments but the performance was not Tony worthy. The show is flat and lacking in something. Kristin Chenowith is so talented but terribly miscast in this bland revival. I would have a difficult time recommending this production.
