Saw "Promises, Promises" last night and loved it. Wasn't sure what to expect: I'd tried not to read very much on the boards about it, as to go in with an open mind, but what little skimming I did seemed to suggest it was a troubled show. Like I said, I just skimmed it.
I thought Hayes was pitch-perfect; seemed like a theater veteran rather than a TV star making his Broadway debut. So, so funny. And Kristin Chenowith was delightful, too, as always.
I'll see later this weekend how it stacks up to La Cage. But bravo to Hayes and the rest of the cast and production team at "Promises, Promises."

Posted: 4/24/10 at 10:45amNothing about this show stacks up to La Cage, other than Finneran I suppose. Hayes doesn't come close to the performance Hodge or Grammer gives.

Posted: 4/24/10 at 11:48amTechnically, Sean Hayes IS a "musical theatre veteran". He was the Musical Director at Pheasant Run Dinner Theatre (near Chicago) for several years.

Posted: 4/24/10 at 4:06pmI adore Mr. Hayes. He is a veteran technically. So are others like the likes of Gary Sinise, but when they make the jump to big or small screen sometimes people forget. I am sure many on here didn't though.

You'd hand him the Tony but you haven't seen La Cage. You must be a real Tony voter.

Posted: 4/24/10 at 5:13pmWould nominating both Hodge & Grammar split the votes they would get & open chances to the other 3 nominees?

Posted: 4/24/10 at 5:29pmProbably not. Hearn and Barry were both nominated for the original run, and Hearn still won.

Posted: 4/24/10 at 8:02pmIt's just nice to see a leading man in a musical who ISN'T Nathan Lane, Raul Esparza, Cheyenne Jackson, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Michael Cerveris or Brian D'Arcy James.

Posted: 4/24/10 at 8:45pmAs soon as I read "pitch-perfect" or "spot on" I'm done reading the post. Two cliches too many for this oldster.

Posted: 4/25/10 at 2:50pmIf you take a look at the Tony winnners over the past ten years, you'll see that the majority of winners were not the gang you cited. Deplorably, Raul, Cheyenne and Brian have NEVER won despite having collectively produced a fantastic body of work.

I thought we had all decided that Hodges was going to win.
Doesn't that make it true?

Posted: 4/25/10 at 3:20pmOh please, Hodges is most definitely getting that Tony Award. NO CONTEST there.

Posted: 4/25/10 at 3:46pmSaw both Promises and La Cage. My vote is with Sean. What a great surprise he could do musical theater! He did what everyone in the audience was rooting for. I never thought he could pull it through, especially after seeing him in Damn Yankees. But he did it sensationally, and he deserves the Tony much more than anyone else.

Posted: 4/25/10 at 8:41pmDon't give the Tony to Sean Hayes. He skates through the part gathering all the laughs he can without ever making his character live as anything other than a two-dimensional laugh getter. There's no conflict, no growth, nothing but a bunch of gimmicks.

Oh come on, people. GET REAL!
Sean Hayes has as much of a chance at beating out Douglas Hodge as David Hyde Pierce had of beating out Raul Esparza.
You know what I mean?

Sean Hayes sucks. Also on the stage. :)
The Brit guy from CAGE is the front-runner to win and other noms will include Sean, Kelsey, the lead from Memphis, maybe an actor from Fela, maybe the male lead from NIGHT MUSIC, and maybe one of the guys from IDIOT.
Overall another very weak year in theatre.

Posted: 4/25/10 at 10:02pmBlaxx, my point of reference was those names that the original poster cited as examples -- I was just following up on the post. Yeah, I know that Cheyenne was never nominated, although in the right role, IMO, he could be Tony-worthy.

I saw La Cage tonight, and I agree, Hodges was great (as was Grammer) and probably deserves the Tony.
But that doesn't take anything away from how much I enjoyed Sean Hayes in Promises, Promises. I was excited after sseing it and apparently being exuberant in a post here is a reason for people who disagree with you to attack.
IF I were a Tony voter, you might have a point. I'm just an ordinary theater fan who is really sick and tired of how nasty some of the people on this board are.
Maybe those of us who can be civil and just want to have some fun need to start our own message board.
