Posted: 5/4/10 at 2:40pmOh, I'm so excited for the cast of Ragtime. Even though its running time was so short, I'm delighted it got seven Tony nominations... isn't that almost as many as the original run got? I'm also thrilled for Christiane Noll and Bobby Steggert, whose performances really were extraordinary.

Posted: 5/4/10 at 3:00pmI believe the original production got 11 or 12 nominations. And I'm excited for Ragtime too, even though I don't think it has a shot at any awards (except maybe Steggert). Still, it's nice to see that such a quality productin was recognized.

There used to be 13 categories for new musicals (before sound design), and Ragtime received 13 nominations. It got one in each category except for the male actors. Strangely enough, it was nominated for two leading actors (Peter Friedman as Tateh and Stokes as Coalhouse) and no featured actor. The funny thing is that this revival's best chance of winning is Steggert, which is the one role the original wasn't nominated for.
I'd put money on Steggert winning. I honestly think it's between the two guys whose shows have closed. But even though I loved Chris Fitzgerald, I think Bobby has this one sealed up.

O I am rooting so much for Ragtime, but I'd rather see Christopher Fitzgerald win over Bobby Steggert. They are both well liked in the community, I wouldn't be surprised if it does come down to the two of them.
Bobby Steggert does have another shot next year I'd assume/hope.
But yay Ragtime!

Posted: 5/4/10 at 5:14pmI was both surprised and thrilled to see Ragtime on the list. Granted, I do think that Steggeret will win (and justly so. He was EXCELLENT) and might be the only one from Ragtime to win, but it's all good. I'm just waiting for their performance!

It is a lesson in timing. If RAGTIME and FINIAN'S RAINBOW had opened this spring instead of last fall they would have been able to capitalize on these nominations.
I guess many theatre-goers wanted to wait and see if something even better would come along later in the season.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

Posted: 5/4/10 at 5:55pmI'm so happy for Ragtime's nominations. I wish Quentin Earl Darrington would have been nominated, though. He gave a great performance as Coalhouse when I saw him in a regional production of the show back in March (which I'm seeing again for the second-to-last performance because he (and the rest of the production) was so great). It's so nice to see this and Finian's Rainbow have so many nominations, compared to last year's nominees, barely nominating any musicals from the fall that had already closed. I wonder what their chances are of winning any of those awards.

I think Steggert probably will win- they'll acknowledge the entire production by awarding him.
If he doesn't win, it will be Levi Kreis.

Posted: 5/4/10 at 8:49pmSo, so happy for them. Bobby Steggert has the best chance of winning something, but I'd like to think that Christiane Noll's chances aren't completely shot to hell. She was brilliant - this season's Alice Ripley.

I was really rooting for Bobby Steggart as well, and I'm thrilled it's getting it's kudos.
Personally, Ragtime was my absolutely favorite production of the season. EASILY.
Congrats to all involved...although I'm sure it's bittersweet.

Posted: 5/4/10 at 9:39pmIt was ok. I don't want to see it win in any of the categories.

Posted: 5/4/10 at 10:44pmAlthough I wasn't expecting any nominations for Ragtime, I was pleasantly surprised this morning. I absolutely loved this production. Wish it never closed. I also wish Quentin Earl Darrington had been nominated. Everyone in the show was wonderful, but I felt that Quentin and Christiane Noll were the heart and soul of Ragtime.

I agree. He was excellent as Coalhouse.

RAGTIME's seven nominations this morning: best news of the day (besides the thrilling news about ENRON closing).
I agree that Bobby Steggert deserves this award. As long as Kevin and Robin don't win, I'll be happy. (Chris and Levi were excellent as well) Let's hope the voters remember Bobby's amazing performance.

I'm so, so thrilled for Ragtime. They received the most nominations of any closed show, and beat out all the musical revivals except La Cage. The show deserved a better reception in New York than it got, and while this won't bring it back, the nominations are a bit of retribution. I like to think of this as a "We're sorry. We screwed up" card from Broadway theatregoers for not knowing how good they had it.
Hopefully the Kennedy Center will see this as a victory despite the financial outcome and continue to put on productions like this.

I found it surprising that Santo Loquasto's costumes for Ragtime were nominated again. (The same costume designs were nominated for a Tony in 1998.)
(Someone must have mentioned this already, but I couldn't find it.)
I got the impression that The Kennedy Center just rented the Broadway costumes from a rental house. Maybe Santo Loquasto stepped in and redesigned some of the costumes when it came back to Broadway?
I do think the costumes were beautiful (those orange band uniforms were unexpected and stunning against the Atlantic City beach backdrop in the original production).
Well, maybe he'll win for it this time around.
