OK just curious, did this show have an out of town try out at all, ive tried looking for any info but nothing is coming up
Thanks guys Xxx
the real question is:
can we get a cast recording!?!
*ba dum ching*
hahaha well i kinda have a not so legal one lol
It just is a show that continues to fascinate me
i don't think it had an out of town tryout...the preview period was extended in NYC and many changes were made...still didn't work of course...but at least it was funny-bad
ahh thanks without a trace you are most helpful as normal.
It just amazes me that they thought it would work, but at the same time it amazes me that it didn't if that makes any sense

Well they workshopped it at Vassar with Justin Guarini.
Yeah i heard a few clips of the workshop, it really didn't sound any different from what ended up in NY

Good Vibes workshopped in a full scale production at Vassar.
And they were planning on moving to Broadway, eventually, but the rights to the Beach Boys catelogue would expire if they didn't start by X date in December of that year.
So they started previews, and it was complete sh*t. And then it previewed some more. And more. And more. And in the end, half of its performances were previews. And even the open show was complete sh*t.
My favorite story. I saw an early preview, with comps. And by early, probably about a week into the run. So I saw it when Rhonda was still a hot car mechanic. And John Carrafa did his pre-curtain "this may be a trainwreck" speech.
I'm walking out after the show, get down the block, and remark to my theater-going companions, "boy, this show needs a director!" I turn around, for no apparent reason, and Carrafa's glaring at me. Good times.
hahahaha great story
what was the train wreck speech?
I think the n so legal version i have has Rhonda working at some kind of diner of something

Oh, the usual speech directors give when they know the show is horrible. I've heard it from Des McAnuff at Dracula, Carrafa at Good Vibes...I heard McAnuff did it during Jersey Boys, so that must have been an isolated incident.
"Welcome to the show, we're in the middle of previews, so not everything may go smoothly...if something happens that we have to stop the show, forgive us..." etc.
I had friends that were in the show and they said Carrafa made that curtain speech every night for almost the entire two months of previews with the exception of the last week.
To quote Max Bialystock: "He couldn't direct you to the bathroom!"
