I heard this exclaimed from my television last night and had to rewind my DVR 3 times to see if I heard correctly.
Anyone have a link to substantiate this? And if it is true, really TIME? Really?

Here is the Time article from last year.
Time Magazine's 2007 Top 10 Theatre Productions - Grease
Yes, it's true. It could be the only musical they saw.
- "It could be the only musical they saw."
Dear Lord, please say it must have been. Otherwise? Oh my...
So it seems it was #7 in the Top 10 Theater Performances of 2007, but the first musical in the top 10 therefore justifying their use of "#1 Musical of TIME Magazine." August: Osage County was #1 for those who are counting.
Regardless, thats just embarrassing for TIME Magazine.

I'm sure they'll get over it.
I believe TIME magazine only reviews a handfull of shows per season. So the fact that it was their number one for that year isn't THAT disgraceful. Although even if I only saw GREASE, I would put watching paint dry higher on the scale of entertainment value...

I'm sorry, but I'm soooo sick of you guys ripping Grease to pieces. Granted, it is not the best musical I've ever seen, but because of the tv show, I made the trip out to NYC for the first time last year to see it, in addition to seeing 2 other musicals. I completely fell in love with NYC, and brought my family back this last month. And the 5 of us saw 5 shows, that's 25 tickets at $100 a pop, totally $2500, not counting what we spent on hotel, food, visits to museums, etc.. And we're already planning on returning again next spring, with my husband's desire to one day spend the holidays in NYC. For all this, don't you think "Grease" has served its purpose and deserves some sort of respect?!! I'm not a theatre expert, but my world has grown wider and richer since seeing "Grease" the reality show, and for that, I'm grateful I turned on the program a year or so ago.

Thanks!! People on this board scare me, so I usually just read and go away. :) It can be a great board though as I gather diff. opinions and plot out what we'll see next year when we return to NYC. My husband just bought me tickets to "9 to 5" here in LA for my birthday, and I'm looking forward to seeing it this Saturday!!
Tintoy, that is great! What were the seven other shows you saw and where are you from?
I like this quote from the Time blurb:
"But director-choreographer Kathleen Marshall's stylish and happy production demonstrated that, after hundreds of crasser imitations, the original 1950s send-up looks better than ever."
Because the ORIGINAL Grease was not the G rated version and did not have the movie songs in it! It was CRASSER.

yah, i never relized how crass the original version was until seth rudetsky metioned that about the lyrics of 'Greased Lightning'. I noticed that the lyrics were changed when they did that number at Broadway On Broadway. I haven't seen the revival, so can anyone tell me if those were the real lyrics for the revival or if they just changed them for the performance

Well, as a "tourist", we saw "Jersey Boy" and "Xanadu". This year, we saw Mary Poppins, Little Mermaid, Legally Blonde, Wicked, and I took my girls back to see Grease. To be honest, Grease of course lost some of its magic for me this time around, but to have my kids in NYC and to make an impression on their young minds, fulfilled the purpose of why we even went. We also took a 4 hr. walk in Central Park and that was just MAGICAL - a precious time with my family that I'll never forget!

Oh, I thought the current revival was raunchy enough, especially when Kenicki and Rizzo get going at it... I was relieved that they were blocked by some other characters during the song "Mooning", as my 10-year-old girl already had her face buried in her hands...
About 2 decades ago, I realized that Time was an utterly ridiculous waste of both my time and money. I haven't read it since; and, apparently, nothing's changed.
I agree, Jon.
Tintoy, that sounds like a great trip.
Make sure to post a review of 925!

Oh, love, you can't even start getting sick. The revival of Grease is no more than piece of waste.
Tintoy, stick to your guns! You're welcome to like what you like (and, of course, so is everyone else). Everyone here is passionate--even theatrical--about their opinions. You may find that your tastes change as you see more and more stuff, but sometimes we're all just fond of things. We may like them because they were "our first," or just because we like them.
Sounds like you guys have had some great times in NYC and at the theater. Keep coming back!
I agree, everyone has a right to like what they like.
And I haven't seen the current revival (although I did watch the reality show - what can I say I am a reality show addict).....when I saw Grease on Broadway Linda Blair was playing Rizzo.....LOL
And while it isn't exactly thought provoking, it is a fun show.
