Anyone been here? Looking for something to do on Valentine’s and trying to decide between this venue with Judy Kuhn or 54 Below love songs with several Broadway performers. Would you pick one over the other and why? Thanks for your advice!
I've been to both - 54 Below more times, just due to programming - and I prefer 42 because it's not insanely crowded like 54 Below's seating area is. I think it's also cheaper in terms of food? And I definitely enjoyed their food.
If someone I wanted to see had shows at both venues, I'd pick 42 for those reasons.
That said, 54 is so crowded because it's SO intimate. The back of 54 is as close to the stage as the middle of 42. So...!
Green Room 42 has the elegance of an Olive Garden. Everything about it just feels cheap. 54 is far and away the classier venue

The OP never asked which was more lavish. 42 is not pretentious and way more comfortable than 54.

I can't say enough good things about the relaxed vibe at Green Room 42- superb service, laid-back vibe, very tasty food & loved their drinks too. No seat is that far away from the stage. Everyone there treated us with respect and welcoming, from the moment we were seated til the moment we left.

The setup at The Green Room 42 is elegant, boasting 120 table seats, each of which has a superb view of the stage. In addition to the table seating, leather banquettes line the walls and graffiti art by Chef Gabriel Israel (an accomplished graffiti and tattoo artist, in addition to being a chef) cover the walls. Theatrical drapes, a purple hue, and an elevated 21-foot stage with a grand piano and high-tech sound system complete the interior design. Not your father’s music club!
I'm a big fan of both venues. GR42 is a more casual vibe that is much more affordable and brings in really quality talent (like Judy Kuhn)! 54 Below is more of a splurge (tickets + food and beverage minimum can sometimes mean you're dropping $100+ per person) with a more "elevated" vibe. (I feel the need to get a little dressed up for 54 Below where I wouldn't necessarily at GR42.)
I think both are really great options - it depends on what you're going for. GR42 is great for a night out that won't break the bank and 54 Below is definitely a luxury (at least to my wallet). But maybe that means it's a better choice for a special night like Valentine's Day! Either way, you'll have a fabulous night.

Thank you so much for your reply! So helpful. Because it’s Valentines I don’t mind the splurge, but I wonder also what you think about the actual shows, between Judy Kuhn alone with Brandon Uranowitz special appearance versus the love songs with lesser known Broadway talent? Honestly trying to decide between these or just another Broadway show.
I prefer Green Room 42. Just a more relaxed vibe. I feel that it not being as cramped as 54 Below lends to that. It's not as expensive as 54 Below. The evening I saw Jennifer Simard, there seemed to be more tables but it was still comfortable. Good food and the service is pretty fast. The staff has always been very friendly when I was there.
Also, it appears that Green Room 42 is celebrating their 5th anniversary that night. Would definitely rather be there than 54 Below.

Between these shows, I would FOR SURE choose Judy Kuhn with Brandon Uranowitz! So much so that I might ask my husband if he wants to go! hahahha
