"Casting is now complete for the Broadway debut of Other Desert Cities, Jon Robin Baitz's drama about a wealthy Republican family attempting to kick sand over its past, which will arrive on Broadway Oct. 12 at the Booth Theatre, according to the New York Times.
Lincoln Center Theater produced the premiere of Baitz's play to acclaim Off-Broadway last winter at the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater. A lack of available Broadway theatres made an immediate Broadway transfer impossible this spring, leaving LCT to aim for a fall bow. Opening night is scheduled for Nov. 3.
As previous reported, Linda Lavin, who originated the role of acidic alcoholic aunt Silda Grauman in the Off-Broadway production, will not be part of the Broadway cast. Lavin will instead appear in the world premiere of Nicky Silver's The Lyons at the Vineyard Theatre. Her role will now be played by Emmy winner Judith Light, who received a Tony nomination last season for her performance in Lombardi.
Also new to the cast will be "Brothers & Sisters" star Rachel Griffiths, who will play the role of Brooke Wyeth, portrayed by Elizabeth Marvel Off-Broadway. Film offers, according to the Times, precluded Marvel from being part of the Broadway production..."

Posted: 7/21/11 at 1:21pmI was sad when I head Lavin and Marvel weren't going to come to Broadway as they were my favorite parts about the play at LCT. But Rachel Griffiths and Judith Light!!!! That is EXCELLENT news.

I think Rachel Griffiths is just a spectacular actress, so is Marvel, but they really found a good replacement. This is so exciting!
And it's great to see Judith Light finding a space in the NY theatre scene, her talent is too good to be wasted, I'm sure she'll be marvelous in this.

Judith Light, one of the best living stage actresses returning to broadway IMMEDIATELY after her last show and Rachel Griffiths, one of the only actresses I'd give a left nut to see live, IN THE SAME SHOW?!

Marvel was terrific as Brooke Wyeth, but Griffiths might actually be better-suited for the part. We know she plays fragile well (Marvel was very together; it was hard, at times, to believe that she was just coming back to life after a nervous breakdown), and she might read more convincingly as (half) Jewish.
THRILLED about seeing Light in another juicy supporting role.

Posted: 7/21/11 at 8:53pmThis is the perfect replacement casting to match the two critically acclaimed performers not able to return. I just couldn't sit through Lombardi even for Light, who I just adore, so am thrilled that she's going to be in a solid show that I would have seen regardless. Such great news. I adore Griffiths as well. This just moved high on my "must sees" for my November trip.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Rachel Griffiths and have been dying to see her live! Soooooo excited for this. And Light has always been one of my favorites, as well. This is *quite* the cast, what with Channing and all. Can't wait!!
