Has anybody heard any new developments from this and if so, might I suggest we get Jonathan Bailey as Sky Masterson and Colman Domingo as Nathan Detroit
Domingo was one of the gamblers in the Carnegie Hall production with Nathan Lane which was probably around 10 years ago. I think, with his personality, he’d be a better Nicely than Nathan Detroit. His Sit Down You’re Rocking the Boat would be fun. Not sure who I’d like as Nathan. It’s a weird part because, while technically the star, he doesn’t get to have a lot of fun. And he doesn’t even get a song. I do agree that Bailey would be a good Sky. All of that said, I know it’s been announced, but it was years ago, and I’d be shocked if they even go through with a new movie version.
It hasn’t been years that’s it’s been announced but several months, really. So far, word is both Lady Gaga and Zendaya were offered roles but nothing official has yet to surface. It is indeed in development and on Rob Marshall’s plate right now.
I think people are mixing this up within the rumor from 2009 of a film version that never happened with Justin Timberlake.
I still say the only way to make this work is to do it as a retro-chic 2D animated film, leaning into the way both hand-drawn animation and midcentury stylized animated tropes have become popular again. Fill it with gags and visual jokes left and right, really lean into the comic-book aesthetic. And cast Seth MacFarlane in a dual role as the voices of Sky Masterson and Nicely-Nicely Johnson, with two of his many associated jazz-pop girlies as Sarah and Adelaide. (Would I LOVE an Alex Borstein Adelaide? You know I would, but this is a ridiculous project and it needs to sell/stream soundtrack cuts.)
