Gypsy Taped for Lincoln Center Archives Today

Just got back from the matinee- they taped the show this afternoon for the archives.

Everyone was stellar as usual- and it certainly seemed like they were giving it just a bit more than usual, if that's even possible. So, at least the show will be preserved for the future.

Thank goodness it's somewhere!
How to properly use its/it's: Its is the possessive. It's is the contraction for it is...

Can someone give a brief rundown of the archives? Can only certain people with a valid reason view their videos? Or is there a possibility that it will be released to a wider audience?

theminutepast, here's a thread about viewing some of the videos in the archive (and a basic outline of how you go about doing it):

When I see the phrase "the ____ estate", I imagine a vast mansion in the country full of monocled men and high-collared women receiving letters about productions across the country and doing spit-takes at whatever they contain. -Kad

I was at the St. James today and was SO tempted to get a ticket for the matinee. I would've flipped out if I saw cameras there and gotten my hopes up that they were filming it to release. I'm still disappointed they aren't releasing it, but at least it was captured.

I'm a little confused. Wasn't this already taped for archives? I could have sworn more than one person on here has said as much in the past. That's awesome though that they are getting it near the end of its run.

legally: when I saw the cameras, I nearly screamed with excitement, but then the usher told me it was for the archives (and, the also made an announcement saying so as well), and all my hopes were dashed.

almost all shows are captured. I'm not sure what they do about shows with a run too short to film...like Glory Days. I would imagine that even ATOTC might have cut it short with too little notice.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

Jeanius - that would have been my reaction too.

Finally the "mystery" of their filming plans was solved.
I STILL wish it was for a dvd release though. That would've been the greatest Christmas gift for me.

Don't they usually film it early in the show's run though? I think it's better that they filmed this later on because these performances keep getting better and better. Laura especially has changed and added to her performance the most I think. And I can't even imagine how much more emotionally charged some of the scenes are with the closing date approaching. I overheard one of the ushers saying "yeah, only 3 more weeks..." and it made me sad. I will miss it so much. re: Gypsy Taped for Lincoln Center Archives Today

It depends on a variety of factors when a show is recorded for the archives. Equus was recorded on its 5th preview. First the library has to determine whether or not the show in question will be archived. Then they must secure the rights with the producers. Based on funding, they can negotiate with the producers to fund the recording or use their limited budget. Some shows are recorded right away, others not until later. It's mostly based on when they have the funding available to do it.

re: Gypsy Taped for Lincoln Center Archives Today

I saw Gypsy with Bernadette in September, and the guy at the desk who signed me in said that he had just finished viewing and preparing the tapes for the LuPone Gypsy.

So maybe this was a re-recording of it for some reason?
You learn to play the straight man, the lines become routine - never really saying what you mean - but i know the scene will change :)
