Posted: 4/1/09 at 6:24pmI agree. The numbers are nowhere as good as I thought they would be. Perhaps the economy is to blame. Only time will tell if the show has legs. I think it will be a hit..

Posted: 4/1/09 at 6:28pmIt is awful (WSS)....advance sale was indeed huge...but did we hear of a one day figure after opening?

Posted: 4/1/09 at 6:54pmIncredible tha the show got the praise it did and I can't wait to see it. But todays $ numbers are just good. Nothing extraordinary.

Since a number of you think the $ are not impressive for Hair for the "day after", could you tell me what other one day totals have been in the past?
I'm not trying to be difficult, just get a better sense of what HAS happened box office wise in the same situation for other shows.

Posted: 4/1/09 at 7:02pmI would also be fascinated by some comparisons too. Maybe when PJ logs on he can post.. since he always seems to know this stuff. Still ; without even comparing.. I think the numbers were good.. but not record breaking in any way. But I think with these reviews the show willpick up lots of steam.

Read the New York Times review at 5:30 this morning and went ahead and bought my ticket for next week(using the Broadwaybox.com code, which is still up). I'm really looking forward to this one!

Posted: 4/2/09 at 8:45amBut can only be used until May 10. I'm guessing they won't be offering another discount code for the summer. And while PERSONALLY I would want one, I hope they get the audience they deserve and don't NEED to.

GYPSY was also up against two other raved-about revivals (SUNDAY and SOUTH PACIFIC). HAIR is up against two panned revivals (PAL JOEY and GUYS AND DOLLS) and one that got mixed to positive notices (WEST SIDE). HAIR pretty much got all raves --from the publications that matter--. I think it's pretty much got Best Revival in the bag, as I said it would from day one when everyone yelled at me and said it had no chance and WEST SIDE would certainly win.
If Swenson is Featured, he will almost surely win. If he's Lead, he doesn't really stand much of a chance. Paulus is also certainly in the running for Best Director. But she's up against the legendary Arthur Laurents, Oscar-nominee Stephen Daldry, Tony-winner Joe Mantello, Tony-nominee Michael Greif, and others who have really made their marks on Broadway this season.
But I could totally see Paulus winning just for that reason too. Because she's young, hip, fresh, and opened HAIR up to a new audience and demographic. That's quite a feat.
She's definitely a contender at this point...I think she'll be a dark horse for a while leading up to the Tonys and slowly emerge as a major contender.

Something to think about...
It probably takes 4-6 members of the Hair tribe's salary to equal just that of Ms. Lupone's. Then after the show swept the Tony's, I'm sure the salary for each of the leads went up a good bit. Gypsy was only pulling in about $800,000 in its final weeks. It had to be incredibly hard for them to even think about recouping in such a short time.

Posted: 4/2/09 at 10:12amWhat about Gavin Creel? Nobody thinks we will get nominated and win a Tony for this? I really like Will as well, but Gavin has really done an outstanding job on this!

Creel will surely get nominated if campaigned for lead actor. And will probably pose the biggest threat to the Billy boys, but I think they're pretty much a lock to win at this point.
I thought he was fantastic and deserves to get just as much Tony talk as the Billys, but these reviews kinda seemed to gloss him over. They were positive and had nice things to say about him, but the Billys really carry that show. I think they're locks to win.
But the producers would be smart to campaign Creel for Lead and Swenson for Featured. That way, both will surely be nominated and won't have the threat of canceling each other out.

rOcKS, I wouldn't be surprised if Laurents didn't even get a nomination. Yes, he's 91 years old and still directing. That's great. But he totally screwed up WEST SIDE STORY. His direction is BAD. His direction and his casting choices are what make the production BAD. He hired someone to recreate the legendary choreography of Jerome Robbins who didn't know what he was doing, and it shows.
I think WEST SIDE will only get nominations for Revival and Featured Actress. HAIR will get nominations for Revival, Leading Actor, Featured Actor, Director, Choreography, Lighting Design, Scenic Design, Sound Design, and maybe even Costume Design.
The HAIR revival is an EXCEPTIONAL production of a so-so musical. The WEST SIDE STORY revival is a screwed around with, miscast, misdirected, mischoreographed production of one of the greatest musicals of all time. The reason why the HAIR revival is so perfect is because of Paulus. The reason why WEST SIDE STORY is so dull is because of Laurents.

Posted: 4/2/09 at 10:36amI find it VERY hard to believe that Swenson would win a Tony for this. Yes the reviews for him were fairly positive, but I know many people who found his performance annoying. And to commercial Tony voters, someone like Sieber or Tveit will be much more appealing. Also, I still think it would be an insult to put Swenson in the featured category, but if he goes into leading he will not be nominated.

As much as I love NEXT TO NORMAL, Tveit's performance is SO not worth the raves its getting.
Swenson deserves the Tony way more than Tveit.
At this point, I think it'll shake down to Sieber, Tveit, Jbara, Kudisch, and Swenson. But Swenson is leagues better than Tveit. So is everyone else that I just named, now that I think about it.
Well, maybe not Sieber, but he did get the best reviews of the SHREK cast.

bjh, Swenson will be nominated in either category. The pickings are slim for Leading Actor this year.
Here is a list of those who are eligible (not they they WILL get nominated, just saying they are ELIGIBLE, or have the possibility of being eligible):
Billy Elliots
Will Swenson
Gavin Creel
Brian d'Arcy James
Jeff Bowen
Hunter Bell
James Barbour
Matt Cavenaugh
Graham Phillips
Stephen Bogardus
Jeffry Denman
Matthew Risch
Oliver Platt
J. Robert Spencer
If STORY OF MY LIFE is deemed eligible for Tony Nominations, you can add Will Chase and Malcolm Gets to that list.
If Craig Bierko is kept Leading, you can add him.
I think the locks will be Swenson/Creel, The Billy Elliot kids, J. Robert Spencer, and Brian d'Arcy James. That still leaves one open slot.
