HAIRSPRAY played its last performance at the Neil Simon Theatre one year ago today, on January 4th, 2009. I was there for the final, electrifying performance and I will never forget the energy of that afternoon or the memories made.
Thank you to the entire creative team who gave Broadway one of the best musicals of all-time.
I've been to some very exciting, oftentimes very exclusive, events over the years but NEVER have I heard an audience so vocal and passionate as at an early preview of HAIRSPRAY. Harvey got a solid 2 minutes of entrance applause, and that was just the tip of the iceberg. I am SO sad that this score is no longer lighting up Broadway every night, while lesser scores like WICKED and POTO play on and on and on.
I miss this show so much! I got to see it twice on tour but only once on broadway. It makes me sad that it's gone and now I can afford to go see shows regularly. The show holds a very special place in my heart

Hairspray has been a huge part of my life for the last five years. I miss the Broadway production so very very much. I'm glad the tour is making a few stops in Connecticut so that I can relive the excitement all over again. I just saw it at Foxwoods this past Saturday and I already can't wait to see it again this Thursday in Waterbury!

I must have missed it, but can someone explain why it closed. I know they were rotating some B-listers into the leads, but was it honestly grossing that badly?
Seeing the original Broadway cast, it was electric the night I saw it. The audience ate it up. I felt the same way I saw opening night for the West End company... Just an incredible sense of something special.
Well, that, and Michael Ball truly doing justice to the 'FOR MEEEEEEEEEE!' line.
I don't believe they were having low attendance. I just think they felt like going out with a bang, while they were on top. I think the show would still be selling well today if it were open. I honestly don't know the full story though.

I unfortunately never saw Hairspray on Broadway, but I've seen it three times on tour and it's one of my very favorite shows. It got just about everything right.
Now that a year has passed....can we have a revival?
"I never had theatre producers run after me. Some people want to make more Broadway shows out of movies. But Elliot and I aren't going to do Batman: The Musical." - Julie Taymor 1999
Hairspray closed for the same reason all shows close: Money.
Last year was a January massacre for b'way closings as people were running scared about the economy.
Sales had indeed dipped; and advance sales were not promising enough. They were smart by announcing the closing early so that they could go out with a bang.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
