I just have a couple more questions about a couple of the songs...
1.) How come so many changes in MBC?
I love the changes and the added lines, but why was "Childhood dreams for me were cracked when that damn Shirley Temple stole my friggin' act!" cut?
2.) I almost died when "First lets make a pitstop at that weiner stand" was cut. Please don't tell me this was for the sake of the younger audiences.
3.) Big, Blonde, and Beautiful. I know this is how the song was originally intended, but my favorite part was probably the beginning. No big deal (BTW I LOVE the leadup to the song). I think it could've worked nicely like this:
Bring on that pecan pie
Pour some sugar on it
Sugar don't be shy
Scoop me up a mess
Of that chocolate swirl
Don't be stingy,
I'm a growing girl
1 offer big love
With no apology
How can i deny the world
The most of me
I am not afraid
To throw my weight around
Pound by pound by pound
Because i'm
Big, blonde and beautiful
There is nothin' 'bout me
That's unsuitable
No one wants a meal
That only offers the least
When girl we're servin' up
The whole damn feast
"... Are you sure you wouldn't like a little something to eat?"
"Is that braised?"
Once upon a time
Girl i was just like you
Never let my extra large
Largesse shine through
Hair was brown and nappy
Never had no fun
I hid under a bushel
Which is easier said than done!
Then one day my grandma
Who was big and stout
She said you gotta love yourself
From inside out
And just as soon as i learned
How to strut my funky stuff
I found out that the world at large
Cant get enough so...
Slice off a piece
Of that hog head cheese
Then take a look inside
My book of recipes
Now, don't you sniff around
For something fluffy and light
I need a man who brings
A man-size... Appetite
I'll use a pinch of sugar
And a dash of spice
I'll let ya lick the spoon
Because it tastes so nice
I'll keep it in my oven
'Til it's good and hot
Keep on stirring til it hits the spot
Because i'm...
Big, blonde and beautiful
And Edna girl, you're lookin' so
Recruitable
Why sit in the bleachers
Timid and afraid
When Edna,
You look liek the whole parade! etc...
How do you think that would work?
4.) Why was Tracy's verse in Without Love cut?
BTW: I loved how The Madison was still incorporated in the film even though it wasn't in the place of Ladies' Choice! The second I heard "Baby don't sleep...", I got really excited since I actually liked the beat of the song.
BroadwayEnthusiast2, I'm going to guess at #2: because the Turnblads don't have a weiner stand inside their apartment? That's where they are in the film at that part of the song.
I saw the film for the second time today and sat until the very end of the credits roll. Is there any significance or history to the ditty heard after "Cooties"?
MadBrain- The Nurse is Associate choreogragher Anne 'Mama' Fletcher (director of Step Up, long time friend of Adam's, and I believe 2nd unit director of Hairspray)
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0281945/
Associate Choreographer Joey Pizzi played the Driving Instructor and Jamal Sims was a Maybelle Dancer and Zach Woodlee- the teacher that Tracy caresses in the teachers lounge.
SNL, I forgot about that! Thank you for reminding me.
I really love the "Mama" trio - and I was wondering if they filmed anything when the three girls recorded for the DVD extras?
the vocal recording session for MAMA was documented. There has already been some stuff shown on the Entertainment shows. And I am SURE it will be on all the various making of", "story of" HAIRSPRAY DVD's I believe will be coming your way soon9ish)
I DO wish though, that we had a film crew for the actual rehearsal at our house. Ricki and Marissa were there, comparing how skinny they were getting, and then since Adam had picked up both her and our deli lunch plate, Nikki came in carrying food for 10.
You had to be there.

Sounds like a 2-disc DVD !!!!!!!! YAYYYYYY ! I REALLY wish for a 2-hour feature documentary a-la RENT with scenes from the Broadway Show's OBC and maybe a commentary from our Holy and gorgeous creating duo
Thanks for this cool feature! It's like the Carol Burnett Q&A section. (expecting the "Who's Carol Burnett?" question) Anywhoo. just wondering about your new songs and what may (or maybe will) happen when they "not so legally" find their way into a high school production of Hairspray. I assume there will be sheet music with the new songs? Would you be flattered or more angry if/when you hear about that happening?
I am flattered to be called the Carol Burnett of BWW! Guess what I'm tugging!
If high schools add those songs "illegally", well, I will both go and see that they are arrested and then bail them out.
Maybe we authors can work on adding them into the high school/community theatre version, as options? Hmmmm....
What are your realistic expectations for box office take this first weekend?
I try not to have any specific hopes for the box-office except for just praying people show up!

I think most of the new songs would be difficult to add in to a stage version.
Marc... DVD: Velma jail ending. please.
Who makes the DVD? - I need to call them. :)
Yeah, that would be fabulous! Can I say that the ending was nail-biting even though I already knew what was going to happen? From "It's Hairspray" up to the beginning I was so excited and anxious.
mateo, I remember something you had said earlier about recording some of the extneded tracks on DVD. I was actaully planning on doing that too, especially if "Lock up the Vontussles, go and shake your fanny musicles" was added as an alternate ending.
wow, this post was like reading WAR & PEACE
1.) How come so many changes in MBC? I love the changes and the added lines, but why was "Childhood dreams for me were cracked when that damn Shirley Temple stole my friggin' act!" cut?
Because Adam wanted more lines to be directed AT the actual kids about what what to do or not do, so that is now "You can laugh but life's atest, don't do this (bump) don't do that (breast shimmy) remember, Mother knows best!"
2.) I almost died when "First lets make a pitstop at that weiner stand" was cut. Please don't tell me this was for the sake of the younger audiences.
It's because they are still in their apartment, and even Edna wouldn't have an actual hot dog stand in her home. But it gave birth to a line Travolta really took to heart for his characterzation "Hey Mama, Hey Mama, have some fun"---"I haven't left this house since 1951!" He really liked that to cement in the fact that Edna has actually NOT shown herself in years and years. Nowadays it's called being agoraphobic.
3.) Big, Blonde, and Beautiful. I know this is how the song was originally intended, but my favorite part was probably the beginning. No big deal (BTW I LOVE the leadup to the song).
Well, we chose to vroom right into it. Sorry!
4.) Why was Tracy's verse in Without Love cut?
Because we had written Tracy her own solo for in the bomb shelter that Penny stashes her, so, the verse in WL was redundant. Then, we went and cut THAT song, so, that's the way that particular cookie crumbled. I think it works great, since Tracy is still so much a part of the number with Link on his verse.
BTW: I loved how The Madison was still incorporated in the film even though it wasn't in the place of Ladies' Choice! The second I heard "Baby don't sleep...", I got really excited since I actually liked the beat of the song.
thanks
So when are the rights gonna be released for everyone?
I don't know the schedule o the rights being released...sorry
thanks though ...then might be a dumb question..and i dont want it to sound rude...how do some people get it and others dont?

Not really a question, Marc. But I just got back from my second viewing. LOVE the hair flip you're rockin' as the William Morris Agent. I assume you, Adam, Scott and Ricki had a blast shooting that.
Thank you, Marc. ucjr, $$$.
Um..I don't get what your trying to say...If you have money you can get it? My local highschool is loaded can they get it?
I hope you enjoyed the "Audrey Hepburn looking over the sunglasses take" I did. I feel my character of William Morris agent #4 really stays with the viewer. I imagine people are still thinking about him on the drive home.
MY MOM DID!!
She asked "Was that Marc Shaiman, with the glasses?"
then she added "he probably did some PROP work so that all eyes would go to him. "
and she said that in the most loving way. :)
a gay man behind me marc, literally said...that was so Audrey Hepburn--and he had no idea it was you!
Agent #4 was certainly the stand-out for me in those scenes; I felt his nuances were much more heartfelt than the flashier moves of Female Agent.
... I may or may not have squeaked aloud at that point as I wasn't expecting to see *four* familiar faces taking those reserved seats. ;D
I call the Agents.. The "POWER JEWS"
ucjr, I meant that I think it's only being licensed to big community theatres. I don't think highschools can do it yet.
I love how you all seem like you're forcing yourself to look completely disinterested while inside you must have been ready to burst.
