Hence why I bought my ticket yeeeeesterday. I had a feeling that would be the case. I just looked on Ticketmaster. I got my seats yesterday morning and while the rest of the seats in my row only sent up $20 each..... I had looked at the front mezz as well. THOSE seats jumped $80 overnight.
Tickets have been on sale since December. Why would anyone on this board wait until opening night to buy, anyway? If anyone knows about how these price hikes happen, we do.
I’m so grateful for this board. For my upcoming trip, I got a centre Orchestra row P seat for $119 plus fees. It was the most expensive ticket I pre-brought. And for a Saturday evening show too. So glad I got my ticket a couple of weeks ago. Can’t wait till next Saturday. I have a feeling it will be the crown jewel in my 9 show, 5 day broadway blitz.
Peter Marks pretty much nails it I think. A tiresome (though sometimes effective) display of style over substance with a few really good songs. Not for me, I'm afraid.
There's more discussion in this thread of the prices than the actual reviews, so I'll chime in Do these reviews really merit the increase? There are a lot of pull quotes but they weren't raves across the board, even the Times is not an unqualified rave at all. I'd be pretty disappointed if I paid close to $300 dollars for a show with basically 1 set and a chorus of 5, Luckily I paid 70 bucks for an orchestra seat at TKTS.
That’s subjective. To me, no show is worth $300 a ticket. Not Hamilton, not The Producers, not Book of Mormon, and not this. That said, I loved this show.
And I've never judged "worth it" by the number of set pieces or cast members.
That being said....I would never pay 300 bucks for any show.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.
Hmm...was Hadestown on TKTS tonight at the last minute? The app shows it was in the board recently, which usually means today. I know it wasn’t on there most of the day because I was checking out of curiosity.
Random, but I just found out Alex Boniello is a co-producer on this show. Just thought that was interesting

HADESTOWN at the Sunday 1pm show was easily the highpoint of our Easter weekend (and that includes a pretty swell Easter Bonnet Parade on 5th Avenue where you may have spotted us in white suits with Vessels on our fedoras).
The minute the show started, that cast of 13 and their 6-member onstage band wove the most beautiful spell that kept us floating through 2 1/2 hours of musical theater bliss. The music making was gorgeous, the design all served the story with perfect economy, and the story was equal parts thrilling and heartbreaking. We're not ashamed to say we were each wiping away tears all through Act II.
I'll tell you right now, we were all totally Team Reeve-- loved his voice, loved his otherworldliness, loved his lost-boy vibe that made you root for him through two full acts. And finally here was a show where the main character struggles to find his "one song" and when he succeeds in Act II, it's actually the most lovely song in an altogether lovely score. Eva, Andre, Patrick, they all owned their roles and sounded gorgeous. I was NOT a fan of Amber Gray in THE GREAT COMET (frankly not a fan of that show whatsoever), but here she perfectly embodied the various shades of Persephone. Yummy.
Did I have quibbles? Just a couple. The lyrics are beautiful throughout, sure, but when the whole show is a series of rhymed couplets, but can't they come up with just ONE true rhyme in that sea of false rhymes? Are they just trolling us now? And I know the minions sing and sing about a wall in Hades, but all the mimed digging did not equate to building a wall. I really expected some brilliant coup de theater for our ensemble to shatter the wall to pieces when they escape Hades. Instead all I got was 10 more rotations of the damn turntable donuts that had quite worn out their welcome by then. (And yes, we were watching from 4th row mezzanine.)
But yay, Hadestown! Finally a great new musical that will enter the pantheon of musical theater classics that they'll still be reviving a hundred years from now.

Can anyone who saw the show multiple times throughout previews and after it was frozen speak to this? When I saw the show on April 4, the Epics had almost no structure or melody at all, and felt more like extemporaneous recitative. I was really bummed about it, because the NYTW Epic III was my favorite song in the score. Did I catch the show on a weird night when they were trying something new, and did they end up with something I might again consider "the most lovely song in an altogether lovely score"? It would thrill me if they did! Feel free to PM me.
I figured with strong reviews this would be a hard ticket to get... surprised by how cheap seats still are on stubhub and readily available on ticketmaster... is this show just over hyped?
No, it is definitely not overhyped! The show was spectacular, and almost all the reviews thought so as well. After Tony Nominations come out, I suspect ticket prices will go up. I'm predicting over 10 nominations, and it will definitely be nominated for Best Musical.

Yes it’s over hyped - the acting and vocals are good! The staging and book and sets....ugh - not a fan. I noted some people left at intermission - but I saw it before it was frozen - so maybe it got better after adjustments. It’s too long in many scenes
I would say it’s a little overhyped, but it’s still a great show and one of the best ones of the season.
Also, they already raised their prices after reviews came out, I doubt they can go much higher with Tony nominations... they do tend to lower the unsold seats when it gets closer to the performance time though, but don’t most shows do that?
Caught the show last night. It’s 20 minutes too long but otherwise I loved it. And I’m definitely in Camp Carney. I thought his voice was gorgeous and the one thing that seems imperative to the character - completely unique. I think the show will win Tonys for Musical, Score, Director, and possibly lighting, orchestrations, and a couple of supporting performances.
