Either AceShowbiz doesn't know what they're talking about, or Hairspray 2: White Lipstick is coming to theaters a little sooner than I thought!

I doubt the Hairspray sequel is coming out in 2010. If it was, we would've definitely heard something concrete about it by now.

I agree. Movie musicals take a long time of pre-production prior to even casting PLUS films are released much later (NINE finished production in November 2008 and was released in movie theatres in December 2009). If HAIRSPRAY 2 was already in development stage it would have been known already if it was hoping for a 2010 release date.

Yup. It's hitting theaters this summer! They have exactly 7 months to sign actors, start rehearsals, record the music, film, edit, and have that baby shipped to theaters!

I'm getting bothered by Shankman signing on to direct every film in existence, yet showing no sign of getting any of them done any time soon.

The Studio (and Company Executives) and their finance backers are the ones responsible for initial "beginning" stages. Not pre-production but, rather, the green light to officially begin.

That statement wasn't actually Hairspray related, but just a general observation in regards to Bye Bye Birdie, Sinbad, Hairspray 2, Rock of Ages, Bob: The Musical and his other 12 projects.

Yes this is true.

Shankman was quoted about a year ago saying the film was out to writers. A few weeks ago he posted on twitter saying nothing has changed.

I wonder if White Lipstick was just New Lines desire to have another musical project? And with the acquire of Rock of Ages and the hiring of Shankman for that project (and perhaps realizing Travolta probably wouldn't return), they've decided to scrap the idea?

Waters completed the story and it was approved by the studio nearly a year ago. Elsewhere, he has described the plot in a pretty detailed manner. He has said that Edna, Wilbur and Velma will make cameo appearances, if at all, as the story follows the kids and Maybelle, as well as some new characters so no Travolta, Walken or Pfeiffer is not a problem. I'd expect some sort of announcement in the next month or two announcing preliminary casting. Aren't most of the "kids" contractually obliged to do the sequel, as well? I know Efron, Kelly, Snow and Blonsky are.

Actually he said Velma would most likely not be in the film at all. There would be a new villain. And from all the plot details I've heard, Edna is still very much involved. She has her own subplot.

No it's not coming to movie theaters in 2010. No one knows when it will be coming out. It definitely will not be in 2010.

IMDB is user-edited.

That was the estimated date of release way back when this project was first being discussed. We haven't heard anything about it for a very long time.
There is absolutely no way this film will be out next year.

End of story.

Just to clear things up, I never actually thought that Hairspray 2 was coming out next year. I just found it interesting that this website would list it alongside other movies that have been confirmed for next year. I didn't realize the site was user-edited......

It's just misinformed reporting from a questionable source.

IF Hairspray 2 happens, if it not locked in development limbo, it won't be out till at least mid-to-late 2011. At the earliest. That's assuming they begin filming mid 2010, at the earliest. Which seems very unlikely.
