And this is where I come in. This scenic designer looks like he/she had a lot of potential, but they stuck to the originals and altered them to create their own style. That is not original.
Don't say that the design is 'iconic', because David Rockwell sure didn't have a previous design to copy. He made it his own.
A good designer can reinvent a design. Certain aspects of every show may be iconic, but nothing limits a good scenic designer from creating an entirely new design.

I mean, his other works are great! I mean his Millie design is very good, and his Beauty and the Beast/Forum designs, while resembling the originals, are very good.

I never understood why certain people think that it's ok to copy the originals, and as to why certain designs are 'iconic'. Maybe certain aspects may be, but nothing limits a good scenic designer from creating an entirely new design.
