The sets are fine. It's the casting and direction I have a problem with. Men with hands in their pockets? That just looks ridiculous.
I was going to say, "Who is the dude standing next to Tracy's bed? That's creepy."

I know i'm late to this board but,
i saw the show and it was pretty impressive.
In fact the Tracy in that show is now standby for Broadway's hairspray I believe.
And this is where I come in. This scenic designer looks like he/she had a lot of potential, but they stuck to the originals and altered them to create their own style. That is not original.
Don't say that the design is 'iconic', because David Rockwell sure didn't have a previous design to copy. He made it his own.
A good designer can reinvent a design. Certain aspects of every show may be iconic, but nothing limits a good scenic designer from creating an entirely new design.

I love the silhouette lights above the WZZT studio. Very nifty.

Agreed Sondheimgeek.
Granted, his Oz set (viewable on the MTW website) is reasonably original.
I mean, his other works are great! I mean his Millie design is very good, and his Beauty and the Beast/Forum designs, while resembling the originals, are very good.
yeah he really did a good job copying David Rockwell. whoopie.
Haha Brian, I feel the same way.
I never understood why certain people think that it's ok to copy the originals, and as to why certain designs are 'iconic'. Maybe certain aspects may be, but nothing limits a good scenic designer from creating an entirely new design.

I do like the new act curtain.
I have to ask...
Is the proscenium design in that theater REALLY pink/purple with polka-dots?
