From Playbill: Beginning September 5, the Broadway run will adopt a new performance schedule, with all evening performances beginning at 7 PM, Wednesday and Saturday matinees beginning at 1 PM, and Sunday matinees at 1 PM on two-show days and 2 PM on single performance days.
I dont know how drastic a change this was, but thought it might benefit some.
Interesting. They may be catering to folks who have a train/bus to catch before 11pm in the evenings.
1pm Wednesday matinees might also appear more enticing to getting school groups to fill the seats. (Noticing the date is just after Labor Day when schools begin)
Also, it might be for the cast and crew to have a better work/life balance and not always get home at 11pm. Good on them, whatever the reason(s) may be.
No, 1 still makes it impossible to get back to school before the end of the day....which is a big deal to many schools. Who knows?

I am very curious about this. As a tourist, I generally prefer 8 pm starts, both because it gives us more time to do things in New York City during the day and avoids a rushed dinner. (Also, as someone who travels from the West Coast, those really early flights are rough.)
Even for local shows, I dislike 7 pm starts due to my work schedule. It’s hard to get to the theater on time, so I usually see things on the weekend.
I did notice on my March trip that the Times Square area closes earlier than I recall - unless it’s my imagination. Most places are closed by 11, so getting out of a long 8 pm show limits one’s options at night.
On the bright side, I didn’t mind seeing Leopoldstadt for a 1 pm matinee. It gave us time for an early dinner and some wandering before our evening show.
The Hamilton producers are making this decision for some reason. I doubt it’s just school trips, but that’s as good a reason as any.

Interestingly, a fair percentage of West End shows seems to split the different with 7:30 pm start times. I've always liked that ... enough time to catch dinner, but an ending time that doesn't feel so late.

I do two-show day trips up from Philly and since Amtrak and Megabus have both eliminated the 11pm departure, 7pm start times (or short 90 minute shows) are really my only options for second shows. So, selfishly, I would like more shows to do this just to make my life easier.
