Telly Leung mentioned "Jimmy" from Thoroughly Modern Millie, which got me thinking... What show is this song ORIGINALLY from?
...this bird is singing.

"Say it Somehow" -- The Light in the Piazza
"They Were You" -- The Fantasticks
"Unusual Way" -- Nine
"Someone to Watch Over Me" -- Crazy For You
"All The Wasted Time" -- Parade
That's probably my list. All songs that have made me cry from their sheer beauty at one point or another. As for "They Were You," Beanmatt, it made a lot of lists last year.

Mine would be:
Unworthy Of Your Love- Assassins
Interesting choice. I agree that the melody has a beautiful contrast to what's actually going on in the song, but I don't know if I could consider a love song from obsessed fans to Jody Foster and Charles Manson romantic. Maybe if the first time I heard it it was out of context. I find the song a bit...creepy. "I would come take you from your cell..." *shiver.*

Hehe, good point, DRS.
I think the little bit of creepiness could be said for almost all, if not all, of Sondheim's "romantic" songs. I mean, take Johanna sung by Anthony...at first listen, it sounds so beautiful, so romantic. But when you consider some of the things actually being said..."Til I'm with you then, I'm with you there...sweetly buried in your yellow hair." Kind of creepy. Not to mention the amount of dissonance in this and again, most of Sondheim's songs.

"If there was a Mount Rushmore for Broadway scores, "West Side Story" would be front and center. It snaps, it crackles it pops! It surges with a roar, its energy and sheer life undiminished by the years" - NYPost reviewer Elisabeth Vincentelli

I also love Jesse, he is so funny. I would agree with Norm and say "You Should Be Loved".

Dirty Rotten Scoundel:
I almost never think of it in the context of the show. Meaning I never think of Charlie and Jodie, for who they actually are. It's my choice for the sheer devotion of the two charecters to these people who in one case, never met them, and in the other, used them. Its this unbelievably sad idea that someone could be so devoted to someone they hardly know. And how they feel that even if they did know them, they aren't worth their love. Its the longing and love for the unobtainable that always gets me.

My vote would go to "So in Love," with "Not While I'm Around," and "Say it Somehow" being a close second and third.

Whoever said "When Did I Fall In Love" from Fiorello! is brilliant. I don't think I've ever encountered a song (besides, well, the entire score of Piazza, haha) that so thrillingly captures whats its like to fall in love like that song.
"...and in a bed."

How about "Too Many Mornings" from FOLLIES?
And since PORGY AND BESS is sometimes done on Broadway, I hereby nominate "Bess, You Is My Woman Now".

"And as for me, I'm sure it's shocking, but I have to agree with Maria too. Part of my 101 reasons WSS is the best score ever, just listen to the music and notes of Maria. I have never heard such music that expressed romance, young first love. It's amazing. "
couldn't agree more. =)
west side story is so beautiful.. bernstein was a genius, truly. he broke all the rules of music theory and composition.. he wrote everything they tell you not to write, and made them sound good. not just good, amazing.
this show is flawless and i love it. <3
