Has Pokemon Go worked its way into theaters yet?

What does it actually contribute to society? You've gotta judge a thing by what it IS, not by what you might wish it was instead. Pokémon GO isn't going to bring about sensible gun control or equal pay for women across the board, but it's an app and a video game. If it tried to do those things it would be laughable.

What it IS doing is changing the paradigm for how 21st century video games are played and experienced. Given that the current model of a successful video game is either "an endlessly repetitive app designed for momentary play and money-spending" or "violent sedentary video game designed to be played on the couch at home while communicating anonymously with others over the microphone," Pokémon GO is flipping the board by requiring genuine physical action and real-world social interaction. It even rewards those who get into the physical, social aspect by giving them in-game items for free that the traditional "casual player" would pay money to get. Plus, it's genuinely innovative VR entering the mainstream for the first time (Ingress has been around for a while, but it's such a fringe thing).

Isn't that enough?

Also, notably: it is free, and the optional transactions that can occur don't really give moneyed players an advantage overall.

Who’s in with me to bankroll the Kad/Roxy-led SUNSHINE BOYS revival? Kad, we’ll age you up. Roxy, we’ll age you down.

Right. There is a slight edge, though, with those of us who don't have unlimited data and don't want to pay the overages.

But as I said earlier, it's easy to be a grumpy old man about this game and it's also easy to love it.

Lizzie

I am far from grumpy but think it all part of the self indulgent society we live in. People going to the wtc as part of a game is not fun to me . People are basically letting this control their lives. If that is for you and others fine.

It's been out for less than 2 weeks...how is it controlling someone's life?  It's really no more then a modern day scavenger hunt.

What Roxy thinks is true is more important than what is true.

And obviously the revival of Sunshine Boys needs to happen.

My roommate had been sitting on the couch for six months. Pokemon Go comes out, and suddenly he's out getting exercise (he's walked 50 km in the past week) and sunlight and meeting people and making friends. But no, this game is a terrible thing!

You are taking the outliers - the tail ends of the bell curve - and making it everyone. ("People"Has Pokemon Go worked its way into theaters yet?  No matter what there is, there are always people that take it to extremes.  What is for "you and others" is not the extremes.  The "people" playing the game are playing it in fun, enjoying it and not bothering others.  And having positive experiences and in some cases expanding their horizons.

The outliers abuse it.  Don't confuse the two.

This is why I wish it worked better where I live. I do get out of the house for work regularly. However, I don't have much of a social life except for going to theater related stuff sometimes and a few other things.

Ha. I love how I've blocked Roxy but just assumed he was being a grumpy old man and he assumed I was referring to him personally.

I walked further down 8th Avenue than I usually do yesterday, that's for sure. The Link NYC kiosks really help with connectivity!

I feel like if you have a feeling ahead of time as to where the lures and gyms might be, you'd take a walk further than usual (but you have to have been out and about already).

I've never been into video games really--except as a kid in the adventure game era (Sierra all the way :P ) and had no interest in this.  But I had a really fun afternoon the other day with my 9 year old nephew playing and wandering around with him.  I don't see any serious issues with people playing it.

That said *grumpy old man* I do worry a bit about when I go to teach uni this semester and finding it much more obnoxious on campus.  But I also suspect at least some of the interest in it will have died down...

Eric -- My thoughts, almost exactly.  I've been playing with my 15 year old....and worry like crazy what it's going to be like at school in the fall!

Right?  There already was one Pokemon in one of the buildings I went to on campus to pick up some material.  Oh well--I suppose it won't be much harder, in class, than getting students to turn off their devices...  Which I can imagine being a bigger problem with pre-teens and teens...

To me the bigger problem is all the bathroom runs kids make to check their phones.   I may institute a rule that to leave the room, a phone goes on my desk.  There are so few kids that DON'T have phones, I doubt its a problem.

Yes, I did.  But don't worry, those pills are covered under my Obamacare.

I don't understand the appeal of the game but that's just me. But if you are looking for a definition of schizophrenia, it is probably something similar to "a person who cannot relate to the actual world around him/her and spends time and energy seeking illusions that have no complement in or application to reality."

Has Pokemon Go worked its way into theaters yet?

I will admit that I downloaded and played the game for a little bit. The reason being was that I was curious as to what all the fuss was about. Frankly, I really don't enjoy the game, just not for me. However, yeah, it's great that it's getting people up and moving more than they usually might, but there's still a lot of safety issues that come with playing the game. For example, someone in San Diego fell off a cliff and badly hurt himself all in the name of catching a Pokemon.

http://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/local/Two-Men-Fall-Down-Cliff-While-Playing-Pokemon-Go-386743551.html

I have read stories of drivers who see Pokemon on their dashboards while driving and "multitask" by trying to catch it while driving. I honestly don't feel that this is a situation of local news outlets being negative just for the sake of bashing the latest fad nor am I trying to do the same. I feel that many of the negative stories I have heard give me the feeling of it being more of a warning than a bashing.

Wonkit, just stop. Making up a fake definition for a mental illness to prove a point is one of the most offensive, idiotic things that a person can do. Not only is it completely misplaced in a discussion about a game that is purely for entertainment purposes, but it contributes to the stigma of mental health disorders. It has been expressed many times in this thread that it's a game that you either love or hate. Nobody is confusing the game with reality, and nobody is arguing that the game has any application to reality. It has also been pointed out that it has actually increased social interactions and taught people more about their neighbourhoods...so it is actually increasing interactions with one's surroundings...so there goes your analogy.

Just to make it clear, I'm not being defensive of the game, I'm kind of on the fence about it...it's more about your ridiculous, stigmatizing analogy.

Stupid people deserve what they get.  Don't Blane the game.

BTW...at least one dead body has been found and abandoned animals have been saved.

The news media is indeed telling these stories as a warning, and, of course, to take advantage of the hot trend.

Exactly. The media reports on the accidents because it's such a hot trend, but you never hear about, say, the thousands of golf accidents that occur every year, because those aren't news.

I saw someone playing it a few minutes into Finding Neverland today until their companion told them to stop. And I heard people talking about it behind me. What Pokemon are inside theaters is definitely something on people's minds.
