Posted: 9/5/05 at 6:34pmI thought the show was really good and got bad reviews and bad publicity...those posters at the Broadway Theatre were horrible and the show was actually amazing. Was the last cast better than the original?

Posted: 9/5/05 at 6:41pmI liked it alot. It had a great storyline, chorography and great set and costume designs. It wasn't the type of show everyone would like and 'get' unfortunatly.

Posted: 9/5/05 at 6:43pmI saw it, had "Salaam Bombay" stuck in my head for a week. I thought the choreography was great, fun sets, storyline not so much though. But great talent in the show and fun to see.

I dunno about Flowery, but I still "Shakalaka Baby" every morning in the shower so I can pretend it's the fountain...

Posted: 9/5/05 at 6:52pmI saw it when that chick from American Idol was in it. I thought it was aestheticly pleasing. Good dancing, good singing, good sets/costumes. Loved the music. The story is what killed it. It wasn't a very good story. But everything was quite enjoyable.

Posted: 9/5/05 at 7:03pmI heard the 1st Prya was really bad...i didnt get to see the original cast...but Tamyra Gray was so good for that role...she opened her mouth and i was in shock to see how good she sounded live. The story was kinda cheesy, but so does "wicked" or other hit shows.

Posted: 9/5/05 at 7:06pmmore than that, it was a Bollywood film basically on stage, and Bollywood doesn't really have a wide fan base in the US, so that really hurt it.

Posted: 9/5/05 at 8:26pmI saw it in London, and loved it. On Broadway, something somehow got lost along the way and it was so-so. My date, however (who had not seen it in London), loved it.

Posted: 9/5/05 at 8:27pmI agree, I loved it in London, and then thought the Broadway version was just so-so. I didn't see original cast on Broadway tho, I saw it with Tamyra Gray, who I think is phenomenal, but a poor casting choice.

Posted: 9/5/05 at 9:04pmI enjoyed it very much in London, but never got around to seeing it on Broadway. As others have stated, the story was cheesy, but that was kind of the point - Bollywood films have incredibly cheesy plots, and they are more about the costumes, dancing, and singing. Has anyone been able to find information about the national tour schedule?

Posted: 9/5/05 at 9:11pmI've grown up with Bollywood films(even though I'm not from India I am from southeast asia) and I have to say that when I saw Tamyra Gray I didn't have anythign to say against her singing but her dancing.... She was just more stiff than the original Prya. It was subtle but I was clenching my teeth compulsively every few minutes.
re: Has anyone on here seen 'Bombay Dreams'???#12
Posted: 9/5/05 at 9:29pmI liked the score and the performances but I thought the book was dull. The Broadway is too big a house for a limited-audience show like that. There was a sea of empty seats in the back of the orchestra

Posted: 9/5/05 at 10:17pmecstatic.....Tamyra just danced to one song in the whole musical...at the end!!! she just danced some steps in "love's never easy" thats it...but she danced at the end of the show and she was amazing.....besides...how cool is it..the star of the show dances just in the last number...awesome!
re: Has anyone on here seen 'Bombay Dreams'???#14
Posted: 9/5/05 at 10:17pmI've only heard the soundtrack but i thought it was great. A friend saw it and loved it. How long did it last in New York? I loved "loves never easy" and "are you sure you want to be famous".

Posted: 9/5/05 at 10:23pmAB FAB---the show i think opened in march ...not very sure...but it closed jan 1st of 2005...i like "chya chya","famous" and the last song is the best! that's when Prya dances with all the drag queens and then,an ensemble of about 40 people joins.

I saw it in London with the OLC - thought it was OK, but didn't feel the need to see it again (though the Indian percussionists (sp?) were amazing!). Occassionally, a track will pop up when my iPod's on random, but I don't really listen to the CD either.
Having said that the (mostly Indian) preview audience I saw it with obviously 'got' it better than me and were having an absolute ball...

Posted: 9/6/05 at 9:59ami love bollywoodand in that spirit i enjoyed this show, but i felt the ny production was lackluster --the female lead was amaturish (her-bio listed numerous piano competitions she'd won, so as an actress she was an award winning pianist. she had to be someone's niece) and they could've taken the over-the-top quality even further. in london, the main transvestite was also fantastic. the ny one, so-so -- and he/she has such a great song to sing it should have stopped the show. the movie star in ny was a teensy weensy dynamo and she was easily my favorite part of the show. also, without a doubt, the best dressed audience on broadway. the south asian community came out in glittering saris, lenghas and kameez. there was a more dazzling show in the lobby than on the stage.

Posted: 9/6/05 at 12:32pmI saw it and I liked it (but I like everything). I felt that the lead male should have been nominated for a Tony, but that's my opinion. All in all, a good time.

Posted: 9/7/05 at 2:44amyes! he was great! and i think if Tamyra Gray would have opened the show...even though she comes from the TV, she would have been nominated as best actress...i doubt she would have won..but she deserved at least to be nominated.

Posted: 9/7/05 at 6:17amI saw it in London, and found it an entertaining but disappointing way to end three straight evenings of west end performances. As stated above, the music, costumes, and dancing were all very nice, but it had major flaws with the book which (to my knowledge) weren't entirely fixed for the New York run. Also, the NYC production cut "Like An Eagle". =(
re: Has anyone on here seen 'Bombay Dreams'???#24
Posted: 9/7/05 at 8:32amSaw the original cast and enjoyed it a lot. Scenically is was pretty and the music and choreography were great. Some of the lyrics and the new stuff (by Yazbeck) weren't the greatest and there were some real clunker jokes in the script. I thought it was well performed, but in making the transfer to Bway, it couldn't figure out what it was supposed to be. Thomas Meehan was probably more of a hinderance than a help. Too bad they cut "Like an Eagle" (its on the album but replaced in the show) as it was probably my favorite number and some of the more extended pageant moments (wedding music) went on about 5 minutes too long.
