I recently got the DVD and I didn't think Hasslehoff would be THAT bad. I mean, I thought the man can *kinda* sing and he's not a HORRIBLE actor....I was wrong. I couldn't sit through it. Did anyone else have this problem?

Hasselhoff was the least of my problems. I couldn't get into the music OR the story, and I love the novel. I don't think another (read: better) actor/singer could've salvaged the show for me.
And that's my $.02.

I'm glad I'm not alone on this!
The show was pretty bad too. I didn't mention that.

I don't think the show is that bad, but the staging is just terrible.
I mean that stupid stabbing and umbrella choreography in "murder, murder"? not good.
But yeah, Haasselhoff. wow. he's not too talented. He tried, but no.

Its a weak show with an average score but hasselhof was REALLY BAD.The moment he sang this is the moment i could not stop laughing (i think he almost hit a note).
The stageing was rubbish but looked great compared to the awfull set we had here in the uk for its National tour(we wont be seeing that show again).
Paul nicholls played the title role here and was heckled some nights as he was also rubbish(the 2 leading ladies were great though)

Posted: 1/7/07 at 7:54amDon't judge me. I love Frank Wildhorn. Therefore, I love Jekyll and Hyde. But Hasselhoff's warbling irritates me. He is one of the reasons why I won't go to Germany.

Posted: 1/7/07 at 7:55amThe show misses the key points of Robert Lewis Stevenson's story and by adding prostitutes and love interests diminished its effectiveness for me. Of course, Wildhorn's music is better suited to radio jingles than the Broadway stage.

well said
They was one song i really liked in the show though but i think it was dropped from the Broadway one but was back in the UK one.
It was all the prostitues who sang it,does anyone know what it was called?

I got half way through the VHS and returned it to the friend that lent it to me.
It just had no 'emotion' for me. I couldn't connect to anybody or anything in the production (Hasslehoff, while awful, wasn't like the downfall of this rather shoddy production either - the blandness goes much deeper).

Posted: 1/7/07 at 9:19amUGhh we had to watch that in my drama class and write a report on it for a grade. I think it was horrible. He was an OK singer but I hated the music & just everything about it.

Well after I started the video and realized Wildhorn had written a score to sound as much like Phantom/Les Mis as possible (which.. I mean you could pick better models too) I was already disgusted and then Hasselhoff happened. I'd bought the DVD and ya... I gave it away.
What's sad about all these horrible horror musicals (Dracula, Jekyll & Hyde) is that their sources are classic pieces of literature VERY capable of musicalization but none of the people trying seem to give a #$%* for story. They just want lots of pop ballads, pyrotechnics, moving sets and flying effects. Jekyll & Hyde appears to be much more about stabbing people with canes and setting them on fire than any kind of well-told plot.
The saddest of all of it is these famously bad attempts at musicalizing these stories have probably ruined any chance of a good adaptation any time soon. Dracula musicals especially are probably over, despite Dracula being very good source material for a well-written piece.

I cannot believe it is still being sold for anywhere near full price
If you listen to Cuccioli singing TITH & Hasselhoff, you can hear Cuccioli could seemingly hold the last note forever while Hasselhoff ended very quickly. The lighting cues in Confrontation were off as well.
Hasselhoff in TITH had 2 weird gestures. His facial expressions looked liked a chipmunk & at one point he thrust his arm into the air & it reminded me of John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever

Posted: 1/7/07 at 2:11pmBest part... in The Confrontation when the Hoff rips his shirt open for absolutely no reason. We rewound and watched that part three times the first time I saw the DVD.

Oi...
I got this from netflicks the other night, because I was gonna show it to my musical theater class, but then I watched it. It wouldn't have been so bad if it wasn't for Hasslehoff. I actually kinda liked alot of the music, but I hated the set. Both the female lead were great though.

I enjoy watching the DVD now and then. I'm able to get past Hasselhoff's performance. I like him a lot as Hyde. His Jekyll is simply terrible. I enjoy Coleen Sexton and Andrea Rivette and I also enjoy watching those cast member who'd been with the show since it opened like Barrie Ingham and George Merritt. I adore the production values. I love the scrims and the moving set pieces.
My biggest gripe was simply that the script used for Broadway was not my favorite incarnation. I think the book was improved by leaps and bounds, but I would have enjoyed the show better had they included "I Need to Know", "Bring on the Men" and "The Girls of the Night". Much like one of the scripts that MTI licenses. The pre-Broadway tour script, I believe.
