Hi,
I’m coming to NYC July 4th weekend from upstate, & am seeing several shows, so thought I’d like to stay near Times Square for a change. I was looking at this hotel & the rates for that week are pretty low - too low? $211 a night. Has anyone stayed here recently? ( I’m a 62 year old woman & will be on my own, so I’m basically looking for someplace safe and clean.) I don’t mind walking a bit to get to the hotel after shows, but would rather avoid the subway late at night (so far I’m seeing Funny Girl & Music Man but will definitely be adding in more.)
Thanks!

If you mean the one on 8th Avenue between and 49 Street, I stay there all the time and it's great. You should be very comfortable.
Yes, that’s the one, thanks!

I like it because
-they give you free water at check-in
-the rooms (at least the king bed rooms) have refrigerators)
-the water pressure is good
-it's quiet in the room but you can open the shade and see some of the lights of Times Sq or 8th Av
-very easy access to most Broadway theaters meaning that you can rest in your room longer before the show
-it's much cheaper than other area hotels
-they almost always let me check-in early---like hours before check-in
I've stayed at a lot of Times Sq hotels and this is the one that does it the best lol.

Also highly recommend this hotel, stayed here a few times, particularly if you're seeing shows north of 44th st. quiet and safe, short walking distance

I always try to stay there if I can. It's great and cheap.

Being from Northern New York, I stay there when I go to the city. It's very much in the heart of the theatre district. 10/10 recommend.

I stay there all the time. It’s my first choice, because it’s a very nice, clean hotel in a great location.

I've stayed there a few times, including just a few weeks ago and agree with the others. Close proximity to the theatre district and a great price.. I have always felt safe being in that area too.
Have fun on your trip!
I’ve stayed there many times and never had any issues. It’s quiet and clean with no frills. Staff is very friendly.

This is not meant to be rude, but $211/night is considered cheap? I'm a Long Islander, so I never stay overnight in the city. When I travel I book Airbnb. This summer I'll have a whole studio apartment in Wisconsin for $65/night.
I can't believe what is considered "cheap" in NYC.

I mean, it's the theatre district. Hell yeah that's cheap. And a lof these Garden Inn type places are newer, cleaner, and more spacious. Compared to that the shoebox rooms of the Hudson Hotel or the Paramount, where was 50%-100% more expensive than $211 over decade ago?

Yes, it's true, Manhattan is more expensive than Wisconsin! By a lot!

And when I saw that $211 is cheap, yes I mean that by Theater District standards it is cheap. But this is why I object to the poster who called Hilton Garden Inn "no frills". There are definite no frills hotels in Times Square and the immediate area. No frills means: no carpeting. no fridge. no TV. no luggage rack. very limited space to move around besides the bed. non-private bathroom.
So spending $211 a night to have those limited basic comforts AND be able to leisurely walk to the theaters minutes before curtain is worth $211.
I'm not sure how the price of an apartment in Wisconsin is relevant or worth bringing up here.

I brought up the Wisconsin price to give an idea of where I was coming from.
In the past I stayed at a Hilton Garden in Boston's theater district and didn't pay anything close to $211. That was easily 10 years ago, though.

I'm still shaking my head in disbelief.
The fact that so.many of you are willing to pay $211+/night and then have the added expenses of theater tickets and meals gives me new respect for out-of-towners.
My theater trips are usually less than $100/day. That includes a TDF ticket, r/t trainfare and a simple lunch.
I can't believe what others are paring. God bless you all!
Have stayed here many times and can confirm it’s an excellent place and prime location. However the entire facade is under construction at the moment and covered in scaffolding so that may be the cause for the lower cost.

Dollypop, just think of the legions of Broadway fans who pay 500$ a night to stay at the Marriott Marquis, or the W or the Intercontinental!

As a NYC resident myself, I'm especially sensitive to the prices out-of-towners must pay, and the rigmarole required to pay less. Since you "can't believe" what others are paying, why not rent your Long Island place on Airbnb so that people can pay the prices you feel are appropriate? Will you include airport transfer?
Thanks everyone! Really appreciate the feedback. Have booked & am looking forward to it.
Have stayed there many times over the years. You'll love it. I echo all the comments here on this thread.
Was just in NYC for 2 weeks and stayed at their sister property, HGI Times Square South on W 37th Street, between 8th & 9th. Great location, a newer hotel - opened in 2018, and have stayed there many times. Our rate for the 12 nights was $89 a night. Can't beat that.
I remember when the HGI TS on 8th Avenue was The Days Inn from the mid/late 90's.

If you want even greater sticker shock look at the prices in the theater district hotels - including Hilton Garden Inn. They are over $500 a night with limited availability or sold out. I’m coming next week and got a lower rate booking a couple of months ago, but nothing close to $211 much less $89. Is something going on there next week I don’t know about because the prices are by far the most insane I’ve ever seen them (this is my first post covid trip). And sold out??

I don't think I'd attract a theater crowd
My place is a 90-100 minute train ride from Penn Station. That wouldn't be appealing to folks who want to see 2 shows a day.

Wow good deal. When I check my dates in July for that property I get quoted $195/night.
I already booked months ago, but much further down town, for $125/night
