It ain't ovah till the fat lady sings. They did. Time to put all this Jennifer Holliday vs. Jennifer Hudson, that song and DREAMGIRLS to bed.
The song has already been sung and the showdown has finally been done.
Time to move on.
brody, you stay mad, Now when the movie came out you couldnt shut up about it now you want newer things.
You need to come to the north honey that Miami weather is making you an angry queen.
It's called overkill. I overkilled this DREAMGIRLS film that I sucked all the life out of it. All of it.
At least I haven't neglected my Blu-Ray copy of the DREAMGIRLS film. I actually watched portions of it last night -- so it still is working it's charm on me.
Next film-version I'm anxiously looking forward to? MAMMA MIA! of course.
July 2008 couldn't be here any sooner.
This song has way, way, way too much screaming. Yeah, I get that some screaming in necessary to convey what needs to be conveyed, but the screaming in this song (and not just this performance, but every one I've ever seen) is just overkill. The song could have been half as long and conveyed exactly what it needed to. As it is, it makes my head hurt.

The interpretation of those lyrics scares me in this context - I REALLY don't want Ms. Hudson to get trapped like Ms. Holliday did!
But, all-in-all, a pretty brilliant marketing and publicity strategy for those involved.
And I tend to agree with the 'it's done' mentality. Can we get on now, please?
I've never heard this song. What's it from?
Just watched the whole thing. Thanks for posting it. Hudson was doing that kind of annoying thing with the word "you" and saying it like zhou. Whitney used to do that. It annoys me! But the performance as a whole was pretty good.
My favorite performance was beyonce. Has anyone seen the video to the song she did? It is a nod to "Rich Man's Frug". That video alone has made me decide to buy the DVD she released of all of the videos from her CD.
Forget about the fat lady.

mateo, that was Miss Ross. She got a Lifetime Achievement Award during the show. And she pretty much shocked everyone with her roundabout comment on rappers using foul language during her acceptance speech.

You did. You really did. Maybe you should make a vow to stop posting on any thread about movie musicals. Or Broadway.
That was sick. So sick.
And Hudson looks great.
wow .. thats was way too cool.. see they can get along.. jhud looking in to the vocal mirror in 25yrs.. thats whats happens to your chords girl, lots of grunts... still pretty awesome though

Holiday sings: I'm not waking up tomorrow, Ha-ha. The actual lyric in the originals score is" I'm not waking up tomorrow,uh-uh." (as in no). It became a trademark of hers and most Effie's stayed away from it because it became inherently Holidays. By the way, Hudson screwed up the lyrics twice during the duet.

If I was in the audience, I wouldn't be able to hold back from laughing at Holliday. Her facial expressions are just too much, and her shaky voice and her having to have the last grunt. Priceless.
Yes, Hudson seemed a bit shaky with the lyrics and the mechanics of the performance at time but they both blew it out of the park. What a great duet.
Oh, someone needs to tell Hudson she doesn't need to put her hand on her hip every time she sings a DREAMGIRLS song. It worked extremely well for "I Am Changing" in the film but I've caught her doing it with "One Night Only" and "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going" now. It seemed at times she noticed and changed the position but then would go right back to it.
wut the **** was that!? haha
that was TERRIBLE
holliday is scary as ****...excuse me while I go change my pants

Get Me Bodied. Kinda funny as two years before there was a hit British pop song that used the same segment--Emma Bunton (yes Baby Spice's) Maybe--it's on youtube

I enjoyed the performance, ha! It was fun to watch, ha! ha! i think I will watch it over and over, ha! ha! ha!
No, not distracting at all.
ha! ha!
Eric, I think I have seen that. They used to play the video at the bar I go to.
Loved it though Holiday seems to over do about ever note(i think she saw that performance as a "im better than you" lol)
Hudson sounded and Looked fantastic

"Oh, someone needs to tell Hudson she doesn't need to put her hand on her hip every time she sings a DREAMGIRLS song. "
That's just her performance style. Every time she sings a song that requires movement around the stage her hand goes right to her hip. Same thing happened at the Aretha Tribute when she was singing "Think". Perhaps she doesn't know what to do with her hand and just decides to place it on her hip.
Uh whats so impressive about singing you original hit in a substantially LOWER key???.... someone please clarify what was so stunning about this?? the fact is that Holliday does NOT still have it because this rendition was in her usual lower key!!!!! did anyone notice that? again whats so impressive about that? i noticed it because #1) she hasnt performed this in the original key in years and #2) Hudson just sounded low to me so i put the 2 versions together and low and behold the Holliday Tenor version has struck AGAIN!!! NOT impressive folks.

They probably think it's "stunning" because both were on stage singing the SONG together for the first time LIVE.
Holliday isn't going to match her legendary broadway run version some 25 years later because the voice changes with age, sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse.
Hudson isn't going to match her dreamgirls movie version because it was taped for perfection and done over until she got the words and phrases right.
What you got was LIVE and you can't compare live performances to taped or legendary 25 year old broadway performances.
THE KEY .. THE KEY!!! not impressive.
the 2 of them on stage together? sure. i'm not comparing this live performance to each ladies recording. when hudson sings it in her original key she sounds great. it was quite humble of hudson to sing in the lower key for holliday.

Musical Mondays at Splash will now feature all three versions!!!
When Hudson announced Holiday, I just imagined gay heads exploding all over the country. Including mine. "OHMYGOD, They're going to sing it TOGETHER...AAAHHHHHH" Boom, Splat!
