I don't think you need to smoke dope to appreciate the sense of "wrong" in grown adults dressing up in spandex and prancing around like felines.

I didnt read this whole thread so sorry if these have been said already. I find most older musicals extremly boring. Most R&H, while they are classics and have incredible music, the books are very boring. I almost fell asleep while watching Carousel.

I agree. I couldn't sit through the (local) productions of Hello Dolly (except to see the fabulous Jay Brazeau from Hairspray Toronto), Music Man, Okahoma, Sound of Music, blah blah blah yawn yawn yawn. But everyone says Gypsy's phenomenal, so I may give it a chance.

Does this make me a bad Broadway fan?

CATS is an acquired taste, to be sure. As for shows that bore me to tears, here's my list:
1. Titanic (it felt even longer than the movie)
2. Mamma Mia (I would have fallen asleep if it weren't for its damn disco-ey score)
3. Grease (sorry, I think it works better as a movie)

Um...

* CATS.
* INTO THE WOODS. (the revival with Vanessa Williams...Ugh, she's such a bia and I was soo-oo bored; I love the show, but not this version.)
* I got a little bored during AIDA, but just sometimes... Mainly it was just Simone I hated. Ugh, she was AWFUL!!
* GHOSTS. (Ibsen. Oy. I saw a horrible production of this show.)

There are probably others I'm forgetting...I hate getting bored at theatre because you can't do anything to entertain yourself. In movies you don't have to worry about disrupting the actors...But theatre? You gotta keep quiet. But, luckily I haven't seen *too* many shows where I was bored.

Crazy For You and the most boring of them all...

The Phantom of the Opera

I swear to god I fell asleep halfway through the first act. And I NEVER fall asleep at shows.

The Slipper and the Rose - if this went any slower it would have to have warning lights and a police escort

The first time I saw Miss Saigon I was at the back of the balcony at Drury Lane in London, and all I could see, waaaay down in the distance, were some lights and people moving around, but I had no idea what was actually going on. Have seen it since (sitting closer to the stage) and loved it.

I think Smokey Joes Cafe was pretty dull. In fact I don't remember anything about it, which says it all really.

Thoroughly Modern Mille. Bring recently single, I wasn't really in the mood for happy people in love. Not the shows fault, although I also found most of the music forgettable.

Rent - although this was more because I couldn't understand what was going on, so I had no sympathy for any of the characters who all seeemed quite annoying - in the interval everyone in the theatre around me was frantically flicking through their programmes trying to work it all out

Notre Dame de Paris - one long euro-pop concert with no attempt at actually acting or telling the story. Romeo and Juliet the musical (London) would also have been in this group if it hadn't had had such wonderfully ludicrous staging/lyrics/scenery to keep everyone 'entertained'

I love theatre

Titanic - couldn't wait for it to be over and didn't care who went down with the ship. Actually left before curtain call so I wouldn't miss my train.

Caroline - sorry. I fell asleep during Act 1. I never felt sympathy for the character: I need some ups to go with the downs - at least one laugh to break the monotony.

Allergist Wife - Actually picked myself up and left during Act 2. I was waiting for the show to pick up but it never did and I felt I wasted enough time. (Saw it with Valerie Haper which might have been the problem).

Dance of the Vampires - if I hear 'Total Eclipe' one more time - I'll scream!!!!

Well, it depends on how you define boring.

Bad musicals can be dull as dishwater or thoroughly entertaining depending on how bad they are. I howled through Dance of the Vampires and slept through Cyrano the Musical. Of course, "bad" is a relative term - one person's bad is another's masterpiece. Mamma Mia and most pop musical complilations seem as boring and undramatic to me as some of the classic shows seem to others on this board. I'd rather watch a dull Oklahoma! or Les Mis anyday as opposed to the latest "Let's watch mediocre actors wail through pop songs you dimly remember from the 70s with absolutely no script to support any dramatic action" show that's invading Broadway these days. I can go to Costco and buy cheap box sets featuring the original (and much better) performers and get more bang for my hundred bucks.

Then again, I kinda found the miraculously original Avenue Q boring after the initial shock wore off. It really didn't go anywhere dramatically after the first twenty minutes. Just the same thing over and over again and it felt stretched. When I think of how far they could have went with the idea and how little they really dared to do in terms of political correctness (or satire), it's a little depressing. And I'll be curious to see whether or not the simplistic music and lyrics are intentional (as a mockery of Sesame Street) or if that's actually the best these two guys can do.

How can anyone find The Phantom of the Opera interesting or Cats, or the majority of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musicals? Except for Evita and JCS almost everything else he has written puts me right to sleep.

"Caroline - sorry. I fell asleep during Act 1. I never felt sympathy for the character: I need some ups to go with the downs - at least one laugh to break the monotony"

I just saw the show last night and there were countless times when the audience broke out into hysterical laughter. The performers are all amazing and I think have no trouble finding the humor in the piece.

La Boheme

The whole show is very beautiful, in terms of set design, costumes and overall look. However, I was bored. Opera isn't my thing I guess, but hey, I went with school, and it was an excuse for me to go to NYC and Broadway. I tried to pay attention, but eventually just "stared" at everything without comprehending what was going on. *Finally* Mimi died and it was over. Whew.

Okay

Cats: One of the first musicals I saw, but now... it's gotta go.

Footloosere: Horribly Boring Showson't get me wrong, I loved the movie, but the musical lacked everything. I beleive I slept through the second act.

Jesus Christ Superstar: I saw a really bad version. It was 'modernized' and everyone was dressed like punks and hookers and Jesus had dreads. Oh so wrong. THe only reason I stayed was because I've never seen it.

Working: Totally sucks.

For me this is an easy one....THOU SHALT NOT, BIG, Sweet Smell of Success, Marie Christine (even with Ms Audra), Oh Calcutta, Jesus Christ Superstar, Andre Hellers Wonderhouse, The Leaf People, A Class Act, FAME, and both Parade and Jane Eyre...the last two work MUCH BETTER on disc. Thanks for asking!

I had a great time at Andre Heller's Wonderhouse. I loved the comedy dance team and the paper cutter.

I find that OKLAHOMA (excuse the spelling) is one of the stupidest plays ever written. Unfortunately it is a bushel of fun to perform so people think that it is fun to watch...uh, not so much!
Also while I'm at it I am going to defend the under appreciated RENT. RENT is a passionate and moving drama that stuns the audience with its vulgarity and thrilling/ original music. The thing you have to understand about RENT is that it was the FiRsT rock musical. It was the first show to be vulgar like it is. It is like watching ANIMAL HOUSE (the movie) for the first time. You have to understand that all the jokes in it are original because they did it first, despite the fact that you have heard the same jokes one thousand times in other films.
In the end all I have to say is, Go RENT! and Burn OKLAHOMA (once again excuse the spelling if inaccurate)

hmmm...let's see...smoky joes cafe! the people were quite talented but...it was just a bunch of...songs! no plot at all!
and brigadoon had a very nice story to it, but there was hardly any scenery(open-air theater) and we had terrible seats. oh, and schoolhouse rock. and we did this play at my school, love rides the rails. ugh. and for middle schoolers too! Updated On: 8/13/04 at 05:09 PM

I though Hair was the first rock musical? I could see how that's kinda poppy rock, so what about Tommy?

Oh God, Oklahoma...don't get me started.

I liked Hugh Jackman as Curly, that is the only good thing that ever happened to that show!
