Hotel Advice - Milford Plaza or Roosevelt?

Ok, so I'm going to New York on Sunday, July 15 and leaving on Tuesday, the 17th. Our family friend's kid is in Gypsy, so we're seeing that Monday night. Also, we'll be seeing Grey Gardens on Sunday at 3:00 and hopefully I can finagle my way into seeing Forbidden Broadway Sunday night. We're a little short on money this year, so we're trying to keep things as inexpensive as possible. I found really good rates for the Milford Plaza Hotel and the Roosevelt Hotel. I've had friends stay at the Roosevelt and they've said good things about it, and the average rate is $237.15, which is pretty good for a hotel in New York. However, the Milford Plaza is only $175.10 a night on average, which is exceptional. However, I read some of the reviews and guests have complained about the cleanliness of the room. I really don't want to subject my parents to a horrible hotel experience, so I'm looking for a little advice. Should I spring for the extra 60 bucks and book the Roosevelt, or is the Milford Plaza not that bad for the money? Thanks.

Roosevelt. milford is more convenient for theatre, but Roosevelt is MUCH nicer.

I would not recommend the Milford Plaza to anyone.

I haven't stayed at either however I rely on www.tripadvisor.com heavily.

Also, you may wish to check www.travelzoo.com for summer bargains.

Finally, I got an email from hotelQT (www.hotelqt.com) that had special summer rates with the promotion code "hot". I have stayed there 2 times and it is nice (rooms are a bit small but they are clean and functional and it includes breakfast). I just checked for those dates and found a queen size bed for 215.00 a night. I checked without the promotion and it was 264.00 per night average. I just say 1 traveler because they charge more for two people and they never check.

I've stayed at the Milford. It's a good location but I did not enjoy the room I had. Stayed in a double, in my opinon the room was way too small to be a comfortable double. And I thought the room could have used another once over before they gave it to us.

Avoid the Milford at all costs. It is a dump. You only get what you pay for. Try Quickbook.com for last minute deals.

The Milford is by no means a horrible hotel. It is a close to all the theatres, food, sights, etc. The rooms are clean and the staff is friendly. The prices for a NYC hotel room are unbeatable. It is by NO means a luxury hotel. If you are used to staying in fancy Hyatts and Westins in the suburbs, and you won't be happy with just a decent hotel, then I wouldn't reccommend it. However, if you are looking for a place to sleep with decent beds and a good location in walking distance of the theatre, the Milford is great. I have stayed at the Milford many times, and I am always happy with my experience. I will be staying there in late July when I visit the city.

There's the Portland Square, as well. THis is by no means posh, but it is an unbeatable bargain. I don't know what you're used to in five star hotel range, but the PSH is awesome.
Very nice staff, room is always clean. Yes, they're small (well, I stayed in single).

When I went to NYC, I stayed at the Da Vinci on West 56th St. I wish I had stayed at the Milford, where it's much closer to all of those theatres on 45th street. I could have saved a lot of walking... Oh well. from rc in austin, texas...

I've stayed there a number of times. Its definitely not a four star hotel, but I have never had any problems. I'd go back (though lately, I have been using Hotel 41 which has a similar rate).

What do people have against Price Line? I know you have to give your credit card up front and don't get to choose the exact hotel.. but using the "name your own price" program you name the quality of the hotel, neighborhood and price... they never give you what you don't want. If they can't find what you want.. they reject your offer and let you adjust something about it and try again. I have NEVER paid more than $120 a night (somtimes as low as $95) for 3 and 4 star hotels in NYC .. in the midtown area... my last trip in June I stayed at the Algonquin for $115 a night.

Thanks for the info, Flaunt It. I guess I am afraid about not knowing what my hotel is hence I have never used PriceLine. I did look at betterbidding.com and it helps narrow down the possibilities though.

As far as from a hotle standpoint, I would never tell you to go with the Milford, which I am currently in while typing this, (as I have been all week). The room I'm in about the size of a really nice walk-in closet (and it's a double). The bathroom is maybe the size of the elevators. As someone said, you get what you pay for.

That said, for a theatre goer, the location couldn't be any better. I've seen seven shows this week, and from the hotel to the respective theatres, I've haven't walked more than four blocks.

It's up to you. Do you want a bed or do you want a hotel?

the milford is perfect if you're planning on a cheap, theatre centered stay.

and just a note on priceline.com - i live in CT but wanted to stay in manhattan the night of the tony's, and i "named my own price" and got a room at the hilton on 5th ave for $160.00; those rooms retail at almost $400/night. it's definitely worth a try.

I went to the Milford Plaza with a school group in April, and it was in a very good location. If you don't want to spend 300+ a night, I guess I would recommend it...Don't expect much...and you'll be satisfied I suppose...The rooms are VERY small and the bathrooms are miniscule...but if you aren't planning on spending much time in the room, it could be up to your standards...We were very close to our theater, but I would have hated the hotel had I been with my family, versus a school group.......

Be very careful about staying at the Milford Plaza. I was suppose to their for work last year and then cancelled the resvation four days prior to my arrival due to change of plans.

They claimed that I never cancelled and charged me close to three-hundred dollars. Eventually the charges were reversed but it was nightmare. Avoid staying there at all cost!

My mother is staying at the Milford right now to visit me.. it's close to the theaters...But i recommend The Time Hotel. It's on 49th next to Spring Awakening, cute little boutique and usually very cheap, always on the websites with bigger discounts.

Your crew is more than welcome to stay at my place but it's downtown. It's vacant right now so you'll have the place all to yourselves. For what it's worth, Kelly Ripa and her family just moved in a few floors below me, so it can't be all that bad.

The Milford Plaza was the 'lulla-buy of broadway' in the 70's. Its a dump. Choose the Roosevelt. Also, try looking at www.quikbook.com they always have great deals. Often you can get a room at the way-cool NIGHT hotel for under $200. And the really way-cool Hotel QT is having summer sale prices. These are both in the theatre district.

Thank you so much for the advice, everyone. And thank you for the offer, BrodyFosse! That was extremely generous of you. We will be staying at the Roosevelt. Not only have your opinions on the Milford Plaza turned me off, but they wanted to charge us an extra 50 bucks a night just because we have four people staying in our room! So all in all, the Roosevelt is cheaper because we don't have to pay the extra people fee and it looks much more upscale as well. However, we may look into Priceline. And also, I've bookmarked Hotel QT's site. It looks very interesting, only it will not allow two adults and two children to stay in a room, so that's a problem. Once again, thank you all very much.

I stayed at the Ramada New Yorker, which is within walking distance of the theatres (it's by Madison Square Garden). It was very clean and friendly and reasonable. I forget how much, but I got my reservations from one of those sights online and was very impressed.

I stayed at Milford six years ago. It was nice too, but I've heard stories . . .
