Since it's on this message board, I recommend the Midtown Crowne Plaza. I stayed there in March and saw Book of Mormon and Wicked. The Eugene O'Neil is literally right next door to the hotel. The Gerswin was a short walk a away too. If you're looking for a nice place right near it all, the midtown Crowne Plaza is very nice.

Marriott Marquis on 45th St. Spacious rooms, very nice accommodations. It is in the center of the theater district, restaurants, shops! $349 weekday rate/$399 weekend rate/40k rewards points per night. One can use a combination of $/points to pay for stay

I often stay at The Row, on 8th between 44th and 45th. Steps away from the A C E train entrance at 44th, right around the corner from the block of theaters surrounding Shubert Alley, and just as close to a ton of great restaurants on 9th in Hell's Kitchen. The rooms are small but very nice and clean, and there is a nice bar with live entertainment in the lobby. We usually can get a very cheap deal on this place, too.

My favorite luxury hotel to stay at for theater trips is The Michelangelo. It's right behind the Winter Garden theater, and in close walking distance to all the Broadway theaters, while still being far enough away from the madness that is Times Square.
Very large, spacious rooms (some of the biggest I've come across in the theater district), a wonderful staff who have been there for years and know their regulars by name, and best of all, a very quiet and intimate feel. It's a wonderful place to return to after being in the city all day.
If you do decide to stay here, make sure to sign up for I Prefer. It's a free-to-join group that sponsors different luxury hotels all over the world. If you're a member, you will get a free room upgrade and free wi-fi in your room, which they usually charge you for.

The ROW used to be the Milford. I heard it got bad but the renovations are nice. I pass by there almost every night and love their lobby.

^Can I ask where you can get good rates for the Row?! I located the hotel in my last visit on Memorial weekend. I checked it out on Expedia, Travelocity, hotel site for a trip in Sept. But their rates are just $50 lower than the Marriott Marquis. So decided to stay in a hotel familiar to me and where I can earn and use rewards points. Thanks in advance for any response!

^Their smart phone app has good rates, usually. I typically book far in advance, and sometimes stay elsewhere, because seemingly at random sometimes their rates are super high. When we stay there we usually get a room for between $120 and $220 a night. We often stay at the Paramount or the Pod 51 hotel when Row is too spendy.

I'd add the Millennium Broadway to the list. It's our default hotel.
I don't really know your standards, but it's a solid 4 stars (out of 5). By your terms, upper moderate? (above Row but below Marriott Marquis)

I would definitely recommend the Edison, right in the heart of the theater district. we would stay there again without hesitation.

On my most recent trip to NY, I used Priceline for a midtown hotel of minimum 3 1/2 stars. Ended up with Sheraton Times Square (which is actually at 53rd/7th) for a little over $110/night on a week in which any comparable hotel in Midtown was charging minimum $200-250/night. They were central to everything in the theatre district, easy access to subway, 10 minute walk to Central Park, very clean and surprisingly spacious rooms, reliable & fast WiFi, free WiFi in the lobby (in case you have to chill for a few hours after your check-out) and best of all... no bed bugs.

I really like the Algonquin (upper moderate) for theatre trips, since it's very easy to get to most of the houses from there. The service and amenities are spot-on. Plus the renovation is great and the beds are super-comfortable. The bathrooms are so small you practically have to dislocate your shoulder to brush your teeth, but hey, that's New York.
They often have good AAA and/or pre-paid deals. I got a room for $223 in late April when most things were over $300.

I use hotels.com to book my rooms because I get a free room after 10 nights. I've already been able to get 4 free rooms.
I like to come back to Manhattan for theater trips 4 to 5 times a year, typically for two to three nights at a time. Times Square hotels can't be beat because there is nothing quite like running around all day, coming back to the room, showering, resting, and walking out of your room within 15 minutes of curtain.
Here are my favorites, based on the OP's categories, although I realize one person's economy may be another's "hell no!" and one person's luxury may be another's economy. So this is purely subjective, but I hope reasonable.

Moderate:
Paramount
Row (the HVAC units are too noisy for sleep)
Budget/Economy:

The Row charges a resort fee? Now THAT is funny!
Prices are such a roulette wheel. I've gotten the Westin at 43rd and 8th at just over $100, and have seen the lowest price for The Row at over $300. I've stayed at the Marquis many times, but not for a long time. I still love getting a room that faces up Broadway, moving the sofa to face out the window, and just enjoying the view. And the rooms are spacious by NYC standards. The Muse is often a bargain and a nice place. I really like the Michelangelo, except every room I get is almost pitch dark! I'm a Hyatt fan and platinum member, but other than the Herald Square Hyatt Place, most of the others seem to often price themselves way out of the market. Recently I checked for a single night and the lowest price (AAA rate) at the new Hyatt Times Square was over $500. The Intercontinental at 44th and 8th is really great if you can get a good rate.

I stayed at the Hilton Times Square last summer and had a wonderful time. Very spacious rooms!
