I think we should atleast wait for it to open then judge.
I love HAIRSPRAY, its one of my favorite shows.
Plus Marc Shaiman is a personal hero of mine.

I love how he/she suggest that the whole message of the show might just go over the Brit's heads. Sort of what happened here with My Fair Lady and Cats.
(Oh, and Marc, I know exactly what "balloon my prick" means. In fact "Fluffer" is one of the special skills on my resume!)

With a good cast and the right marketing it will do fine (not sure as successful as broadway but will see), however maybe just wait for it to be offically announced?! Everyone is going on a rumour in a british tabloid. Yes these often prove true but still, nothing offical as yet.

Its def not a rumour
Im very good friends with a lot of the people involved with Fame and they said they wanted to keep hold of the theatre because they wanted to take the sequal in but they could only have it until August/sept due to it already being booked to "Another Show" from then, so it seems to add up.
Fame Forever is now hunting for another home

Yes, Hairspray didn't fare too well in Toronto, but wasn't that around the time with the SARs scare taking place?

"I'm just wondering if the release of the motion picture version which should be hitting the UK on or before the stage versions opening date will hurt it's box office. Why pay more for essentially the same thing that's showing at the local cinema. "
Well, apparently you haven't paid attention to the movie musicals that have been released lately. The Broadway productions of RENT, The Phantom of the Opera, and Chicago ALL saw siginificant increases in box office revenue after the film versions of these shows were released. In Chicago's case, a new national tour went out on the road. The Producers is the only show that so no noticeable difference in box office, but since no one actually saw that movie it's not surprising. :o)

Threadjack-ette: I'd love Dreamgirls to take the bold step across the water now as well.
And if Hairspray doesn't feature Alison Jiear, Des Barritt, Melanie Marshall and that lovely girl from Caroline or Change, I'll be sad.

I think the show itself is fun, but the 2 times I have seen it, it was VERY weak. I saw it in NYC in June 2004 and L.A. in April 2006.

So the Toronto company of Hairspray garnered eight Dora nominations (Toronto theatre awards) and still flopped...just sayin'.

How wonderful to see all the early posters on here proven so wrong! Book your tickets now- theyve just gone on sale till April 2009. The shortest run that the London production will get is 3 years!

It was a terrible time in Toronto. I had just moved back to look after my dad and then SARS hit. Killed Hairspray. The Producers died as well, but the guy playing Max was atrocious.

Sorry, someone lost me when they said HAIRSPRAY has a great message.
Yes, show may be fun, it has a good score ('cept for a few numbers), and it's good fluff, but a great message? I find its Disney-fied racial story about a white girl saving all the black (stereotypical) people and helping them reach integration to be quite bland and silly (want a good show with profound messages about race? See CAROLINE OR CHANGE or even RAGTIME).
After the Laurence nods and the rave reviews I've no doubt the theatre has lost its curse. Show will probably run for a while.

I think you are missing the point, Ray.
Hairspray takes on some major issues, just in a lighter way.
It doesn't have to be dramatic and preachy.

I saw 'The Producers' in Toronto and it was terrible. Every comic moment was lost by the two guys (names erased) and the house was barely a third full in the Cannon that holds 2500!

The London production of HAIRSPRAY just received 11 Olivier Award noms, has gotten lots of rave reviews (especially Michael Ball) and the fans love it.

I don't see it "flopping" anytime soon.

Actually, it is a Disneyfied story about a fat white girl who is discriminated against for her size and finds friendship and support among the African American community and joins them to help fight in their cause. Why is it bland and silly? Well, the style is a bit campy, but that is John Waters. Did you feel the same about the original movie or just the musical version?

Yeah, the central character in Ragtime exacts his revenge through terrorism and martyrdom. Great message.
