How is Avenue Q Holding Up?

The show is currently celebrating its 15 year in New York City. I was lucky enough to catch the show in the spring of 2004 and I keep on meaning to catch it again but it keeps sliping my mind.

Has anybody caught it lately? Does the humor still hold up or is it becoming dated? How is the cast?

Last question, I know "For Now" lyrics were changed after George Bush left office to a different political figure but, I forgot what it is? Have they changed again since Trump got into office or is it still the same lyric from 2009?

I saw a production of the show in San Francisco around Christmas 2015 and it was Donald Trump since then. Out of curiosity does anyone know what it was during that Bush-Trump interim? Still Bush?

Per an article I read: the lyric, which was updated in November 2015, now states, “Donald Trump is only for now.” (Through the years, the lyric had been changed to BP [following the oil spill], Fox News, Justin Bieber, Chick Fil a, Glenn Beck and Prop 8.)

Always surprised this show didn't tour more. It's such a great show, and feel like it would do well elsewhere. Sit down in San Fran or something.

I think they change it with what's relevant - my friends said sometime after the oil spill years ago it was BP

They screwed themselves over at their height of it's popularity and opted for an exclusive Vegas sit-down with the stipulation that it wouldn't tour North America. When it finally was allowed to tour, it was too late.

I saw the touring production back in the day and it was pretty good actually, but it's really not a show that tours well IMO. A lot of people seemed more into getting up and buying drinks and such. They didn't care that they were missing a lot of the story. People also left during the bows as if it was a movie. But then that last part may have applied to a lot of shows and not just Avenue Q specifically. Also, the audience didn't heed the warning that this show was not appropriate for children as there were a lot of children in the audience. To give you another insight, the line that the audience hooted and hollered for the most was the one about the Mexican busboy needing to learn to speak "goddamn English".

When I saw the Off-Broadway production like 2-3 years ago, it seemed to be lacking in energy and I think the material sort of is dated.

I was thinking on putting the show on my list, but I would really wanted to know from people that went recently if it's still worth seeing it.

Never saw a professional production of this before tho.

I saw it at New World Stages a couple of months ago, my first experience with the show. I kind of wondered what the fuss was about. I guess it was groundbreaking in its day, but it didn't seem that sharp or original to me.

It was pretty fresh (but not THAT fresh) back in 2003-2004. Plus, it was in very good shape and executed its intentions and plot with ease compared to its competition. It hit me perfectly a little bit after as I was out of college and living Princeton's life (well, sort of) and experiencing these adult lessons Avenue Q was teaching first-hand. Like "does this guy like me? He burned me a CD (yes I'm that old)"..."commitment? Yikes."; "man after being forced to repress myself all day and keep things inside, it's sure is nice to be as loud as the heck I want when I'm...."; "man, he sure doesn't know what he wants out of life...but do I?" etc.

It's a very specific show that hits a very specific demographic I find. However, it still deals with the very relevant topic of "adulting" which people still talk endlessly about and joke about.

The first time I saw it was on tour years ago. I loved it. I saw it again while in Lincoln, Nebraska earlier this year when it was being performed on a college campus by mostly theater students with some help from the local repertoire company. I think I loved it even more in a small theatre. I think the show itself is holding up just fine. I can’t imagine the off-broadway production is suffering for talent. I also believe that original cast members are joining for short periods in honor of its 15-year anniversary. Even though I haven’t seen the off-Broadway production, I’d say if you’re intrigued by the show, follow your gut and go.
