I'm feeling optimistic, so I decided to start a thread about the Death o' Broadway!!!!
How long does it have and when will it end? Economic depression? Natural disaster? Lack of interest? Who knows!
I say fifty years and some type of natural or unnatural disaster.
never.
Theater is the second oldest form of entertainment (drum riff). Broadway is the cultural center of the country - as long as the country lasts, Broadway will in one form or another.
It got through all of last year and it's here.

God I love FOLLIES!!!
As long as there are still people like us who are passionate about the stage and appreciate its beauty it's not going anywhere.

Petite, even if we don't like something, it's still a part of "theater." Remember Bill Sampson (aka Gary Merrill) in All About Eve:
Want to know what the Theater is? A flea circus. Also opera. Also rodeos, carnivals, ballets, Indian tribal dances, Punch and Judy, a one-man band - all Theater. Wherever there's magic and make-believe and an audience - there's Theater. Donald Duck, Ibsen, and The Lone Ranger, Sarah Bernhardt, Poodles Hanneford, Lunt and Fontanne, Betty Grable, Rex and Wild, and Eleanora Duse. You don't understand them all, you don't like them all, why should you? The Theater's for everybody - you included, but not exclusively - so don't approve or disapprove. It may not be your Theater, but it's Theater of somebody, somewhere.

It will end when an asteroid smashes the earth.
(Or, perhaps, when a musical version of ARMAGEDDON opens.)
As comforting as it is to think that Broadway, or anything, will last forever...nothing does.
Didn't you hear? Broadway is closing in October. Unless it pulls a 'Rent'.
Theatre is eternal. You can jabber about "THE DEATH OF THEATRE" all you want, but it has existed in one form or another for longer than almost every other entertainment medium or art form, so it ain't going anywhere. It's a hugely adaptable artform, and will outlive every single one of us (on this website today, not the human race generally :P).

As long as there is intelligent life on planet earth there will be theater. No economic downturn can stop it. People turned out to see shows even when they lived in fear of catching the black death. Operas that are 500 years old are still part of current repertory.
Watch the PBS Broadway series- old timers remember coming to New York in the teens to be told that Broadway was on it's last legs.
They've been talking about Broadway dying for decades. There is even a section in the documentary BROADWAY: THE GOLDEN AGE where numerous actors make mention how they've been talking about Broadway dying since the 1930's.
Its 2008 and its still going.
That should answer your inquiry.
In all honesty, Broadway will die when the coast lines begin to change due to global warming and most of Manhattan ends up underwater.
Broadway will die in on a beautiful summer night with a full moon in the year 2056.

Hey CATS, maybe when NYC is under water they will just move Broadway a little more West. We've got plenty of room for it here in Louisville.
Judging by reactions, Broadway is going to IMPLODE on October 19th. Hurry while it's still there!
I love Sunset Boulevard too, Petite.
Ooh, me too me too! I'm pleased to report it works STUNNINGLY well as an actor-musician piece. DAMN the Watermill production better transfer to the West End...
I loved Sunset as well.
I love Broadway, but the idea that it will last as long as humans (unless we really are going to end in the next few decades) is a little silly. I mean, it's only been around about a century. Less, really, depending on how you define Broadway (and obviously we're talking about the theatrical concept, not the street name).

Broadway, geographically and as the center of commercial theater, might not last forever. However, theater will always exist as long as there are people. Broadway doesn't hold a monopoly on theater.
I love Broadway and think it will be around for many, many years!
when spider man opens. who in the hell is thinking of these things?!
