I'm Seeing Kinky Boots For The First Time

I'm seeing "Kinky Boots" today at Austin's Bass Concert Hall.  Just curious, but how did you feel about the show after you saw it for the first time too?  I am treating myself today on my 54th birthday.

I had a great time at the show. I was sitting in the 3rd or 4th row, and one of the Angels made eye contact and winked at me during the finale, which made my day. You'll love it! Have fun!

I thought it was a great time--had a fun energy and a nice message. Everyone in our group (there were five of us) really enjoyed it! Have a fantastic time!

I really enjoyed Kinky Boots my first time watching it. The music is what won me over and it has a nice message and great leads. Overall I felt it wasn't really anything special but it was a fun uplifting night out and what more could you ask for.

I have enjoyed the show each time I have seen it...and the first time was no exception (except I saw a preview the first time so was able to see a few extra scenes that were eventually cut from the show when it was "set".) I have only seen it in NYC...

happy birthday!

 I felt very joyful and completely satisfied at the conclusion of Kinky Boots after seeing the OBC during its first year.. ive seen the show three times since

I loved the story(had seen the movie) and thought it was a great transfer of the movie story. Book had lots of fantastic one liners form harvey fierstein. Cindi Lauper hit it out of the park with the score, (very memorable and catchy songs) and the cast was fantastic costumes and makeup of course were incredible and the sets and lighting were well done

I think kinky boots is in that rare category of "perfect musical", fast paced, wildly entertaining, emotionally moving, and very memorable songs, and is one of the top three musicals of the past five years, along with Book of Mormon and Hamilton.

I will see it again at some point....

I enjoyed it, but in no way would I describe it as a 'perfect musical'. To me it was like cotton candy, fun while it lasted, but when it was gone, there was no lingering effect. Walking to dinner afterward I couldn't recall one tune. I did get the feeling that I was being beaten over the head for 2 1/2 hours, and the number I liked the best, 'I'm Not My Father's Son', actually occurred when the show slowed down and caught its breath for a minute. 

 

FWIW, everybody I've recommended the show to has enjoyed it, but nobody I know thought the score was memorable enough to buy the CD (we're old, we still buy CDs)

 

For me, a few of the musicals I consider 'perfect' are South Pacific, A Chorus Line, and The Most Happy Fella. I haven't seen Hamilton, but, IMHO, Kinky Boots  is certainly not of that caliber.

The show is so mediocre.  Billy porter elevated the show to make it seem better than it was. I can't imagine anyone wanting to see it more than once.

I saw Kinky Boots quite a few times this summer. Its a fun show. Are you going to come out profoundly changed? Probably not. Are you going to have a good time (as long as you let yourself have a good time), yes.

I loved the show and saw it without Porter the first time around and I quickly booked tickets to see the tour when it was near me and plan to do so again when it comes back! Also if I get to nyc in time I would love to see Wayne Brady! A feel good show that had me singing and dancing for weeks afterwards both times I've seen it. Would love to see it again and again!!! Happy birthday and enjoy!!!

I saw the tour when it came through Chicago this summer, and I really enjoyed it. It's a fun score, has some really wonderful dance moments, and it's a great night out. You'll have a fun time- have a great birthday!

Totally with you on this.  The music is mediocre and the book is horrible.  At intermission, my cousin and I listed seven things that we predicted would happen in the second act.  Six of them happened and the seventh sort of happened.  Billy Porter was exceptional, but that was by far the worst show I saw on that trip to New York.

Is that really that difficult a party trick, though? I mean, I wouldn't engage in that sort of thinking, since it just further deflates the time you're having... but I have to imagine it wouldn't be too difficult to succeed at this, were I so inclined. If Act I is all the conflict, you predicted the resolutions?! Eh...

The plot is just tired and predictable. And then they wrapped  up the finale  in a "cute" little hairspray You can't stop the beat rip off. Boring....

I really enjoyed it. Saw it on tour and in NYC with the original cast (Billy Porter was phenomenal!). I liked the movie too. It's a fun show with a good uplifting message. I think you will find it an enjoyable evening in the theatre.

Didn't register with me at all either.  I guess I was expecting too much based on all the raves.  My friend and I left the theater feeling somewhat unfulfilled and, as someone else mentioned here, didn't find the music particularly memorable.

I think that it's a fun time at the theatre, and maybe a bit more. I found the score memorable, especially Hold me in Your Heart and History of Wrong Guys. The Charlie character is a bit lackluster, but the rest of the show goes very well and a few times, flies. It sounds like you are seeing the tour, the cast was great when I saw it. I think you will enjoy it.

I thought it was a fun night of theater. Nothing to rave home about but definitely a solid show that is held up by Lola. Anytime Lola isn't on stage, the show drags, and I would imagine with a weak actor playing Lola the show will fall apart. Also, the first 20 minutes of the show could easily be cut down to 6-7 minutes. "Hold Me In Your Heart" surprised me as I wasn't expecting that type of number to be put into this fun-type of flashy show. The finale was as expected, but I would definitely go back and see it again. Looking to attend Porter's final show & I'd be interested in seeing Brady in it to see if he pulls through.

Wow is right.  What a joyful, uplifting person.

It's intermission. LOVE the show.   Sex Is In The Heel is fantastic.  J. Harrison Ghee is playing Lola with Adam Kaplan as Charlie.  He is very young looking and adorable.  Jim J Bullock plays George.
