Which is a little backwards; you can get everything you'd need out of Wicked in a single listen, but Passion would throw up something new and wonderful for each of those ten times you'd otherwise waste on Wicked. :3
I completely agree with Weez even with 'Passion' being my least favorite Sondheim score.
Easy, fella! Accusing me of being any kind of logical has got to be some sort of slander. O_O
I think anyone who has lost a best friend keeps Wicked a little closer to their hearts than most. I remember "For Good" really touching my memory of my late friend when I first heard it.
^^ Not always true
it's different for everyone. not sure you can make a big assumption like that
That shrieking woman at the end of the Finale is awful! Why did they not cut her out? It's out of tune and painful.
I can foresee the Idina Menzel jokes already, but to clarify...no, this particular woman is a chorus member.
I know I may be alone here and I certainly don't want to start another Wicked Movie thread, but I'm personally looking forward to the film adaption. The cast recording is great, but film scores do tend to sound a lot richer and flesh things out. Plus, the overall 'look' of the film is something I'm quite excited about; costumes, setting etc.
For the record, I love PASSION. It is not considered a bad show, it won 4 major Tonys, including Best Musical. It's not Sondheim's best, but it's pretty great material.

I'm looking forward to a soundtrack as well, because I do not like Idina and Kirstin in the roles, yea, I said it.
Aw don't be ashamed, I was just singing Noone Mourns the Wicked in the shower 20 minutes ago haha. I dont listen to the recording much because I HATE Idina Menzel in it, but once in a while I go through my Wicked phases.
Blaxx. Shut up. Someone said soundtrack instead of recording? Alert. The. Effing. BWW. Police.
Oh, wait, thats you, isnt it?

Are you referring to me? Because I was talking about the movie, therefore a sound track.
Oh, no, don't worry, it wasn't about you.
You bet that's me, love. And it's CAST recording.

"The score is not very strong but it's just very cleverly written in that while it's not perfect, it's still catchy..."
Agree with the first part, but I honestly do not think the songs are catchy at all, except for maybe the wizard song (and just the repetitive part of this one). The music was very enjoyable while watching the show, just not memorable (thus the weak score).
I listen to the cast recording every so often. I don't like it, but I still listen to it. Quite frankly, I can't STAND Idina in the cast recording, Kristin is listenable, but Idina's "belt" is shrill, and really annoying.
I'm scared to admit this, but yeah... Idina Menzel's voice is really hard on the ears for me. Then again, I've never been a big fan of female vocalists in general. But I do love Kristin Chenoweth, and the actress who plays Nessarose (something Federle... I'm so sorry, I've forgotten) has a lovely voice.
I think the score never matches its brilliant source material. The score works a lot better live than it does on disc.

Oh, I didn't mean to say that everyone did or those were the only people who appreciated it. Sorry. Just that, in my experience at least, people see the show in a different light. Not always, of course.
I haven’t listened to the OBCR of Wicked in over a year. I love Kristin, but I just can’t stand listening to Idina’s voice.

Wicked is terrible, IMO, but I fully admit to having "Defying Gravity" on my mp3 player.
Wicked is my favourite soundtrack. Along with the Legally Blonde soundtrack.
Sondheim is the worst composer ever. I love Wicked because the music is hummable. I don't have any of his soundtracks.

Christ grow up. You like it, it's a good score, so what. The drama-queeny-ness is a bit ridiculous.
I know the difference between a sound track and a cast recording but it seems these days everything is considered a soundtrack when you go to the record store so what is the big deal? Everyone knows what you are talking about. If it bothers you so much write a letter to Wall Mart and Best Buy.

"I feel like I'm being unfaithful to Sondheim by listening to these cheesy melodies and awful lyrics."
ljay, I do not think that Sondheim, nor any composer, nor any theatre lover, really cares about what you listen to. All that matters to Sondeim and theatre lovers is that you are listening to something that touches you and reaches you and that you just plain enjoy!!! Sondheim isn't going to strike you for not constantly listening to 'brilliant' theatre scores!! Even sondheim has admited to enjoying a so-called "weak" skor, Taboo.
