Iconic Costumes

Mmmm... I don't know.
Belle's gold dress I'll buy, because it's based off the original Disney movie and Beauty and the Beast has been performed by regional companies.
Rent is still in it's original Broadway run and all touring versions have been based off of that production, so it's still too soon to call any of those costumes "Iconic".
I also agree that there are no iconic costumes in Miss Saigon. Iconic set pieces maybe, but not costumes.
Unfortunately, the original Cagelle costumes cannot be considered iconic. A great many number of regional and amateur productions of that show have taken place with the Cagelles in a number of different costumes. A show like that depends on the costume designer of the individual production.
It becomes iconic when it becomes so ingrained in the moment that no costume designer would dare deviate from it. Dolly will always descend the staircase in a red gown. Evita will always enter the top of act two in a giant white dress. The Wicked Witch Of The West will always wear some variant of the all-black dress with the pointy black hat be it Wizard of Oz or Wicked. Some characters HAVE to wear certain clothes. That's the difference between "iconic" and simply well-known.
C is for Company is right - Maria's white dress in West Side Story falls into that category as well.

As fenchurch said, there will NEVER be a production of Rocky Horror that does not have Frank in the leather corset and thong, with fishnets.
You probably won't see a Sound of Music (post-movie) where Maria isn't in a vairant of that opening dress.

How about Effie's hideous pink maternity top during the "It's All Over"/"And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going" sequence?

Haha, I'd totally see that up there, however only from it being ingrained in my mind after viewing the Tonys telecast that year 30 times.

The only ones I can really think of are the white dress from Evita and the red Dress from Hello, Dolly.
I think what makes them iconic is that if you saw anyone wearing either of those dresses, you would automatically equate them with the show. I wouldn't do the same with Maria's dress, yes Maria may always wear it, but if I saw someone walking down the street wearing it, I wouldn't know if they were going to a costume dressed up as Maria, or just wearing a pretty white dress.

Posted: 2/5/07 at 10:02amI'm a little confused about an earlier post listing "Mama Rose's purple dress." I know that Bernadette Peters wore a purple dress for ROSE'S TURN in the recent revival, but none of the other productions I've seen have featured any iconic outfit for that number. If there are any iconic costumes in GYPSY they are the coats made out of blankets and the stripper's outfits. And, to a lesser extent, Baby June's white fur coat and matching hat.

I totally agree wonderwaiter....people are confusing famous with iconic...
dorothy's checkered dress in "wizard of oz"....iconic....it would be a whole other world if dorothy stepped off the farm in over all's and a white t-shirt on...
effies outift=not iconic.

Posted: 2/5/07 at 12:02pmI agree Mercades, it seems that few people have the same definition of what "iconic" is! ACL costumes, yes but Effie's maternity top? wtf?

Its so funny people mention The Wizard of Oz costumes because I'm watching the movie right now! Most of those costumes show up in every production of The Wizard of Oz.
Possibly some of the costumes from The Lion King.

Thee's not much scope for change with Mary Poppins.
For a single item: Bob Fosse and the bowler.

I agree with wonder, an "iconic" costume is really one that almost every production: professional to high school emulates in their productions. You can't really call anything from LES MIZ, MISS SAIGON, PHANTOM or RENT iconic, because there haven't been regional theatre productions yet.
But do a google search for EVITA, DOLLY, THE KING AND I, Dorothy in OZ, Cassie in ACL, Nancy in OLIVER, etc and you will see most productions try to recreate the "iconic" original costume pieces.
I'm not sure I'd say the Wicked Witch's costume from OZ is iconic: at least in its not exclusive to OZ - most Wicked Witches in fiction have pointed hats and wear black...

--- Cassie's red leotard and wrap around skirt in A CHORUS LINE
--- The phantom's white half-mask. There have bene many variations on the mask Erik wears in many of the versions, but it seem as though Maria Bjornson's design has become THE mask people associate with POTO.
--- Eponine's hat and baggy trench coat, Enjolras' red vest and Cosette's black dress with the white lace collar
--- Roger's Chrysler Building dress in THE PRODUCERS
--- The makeup/colors/designs for the CATS in CATS. There are cat costumes and there are CATS costumes
--- Belle's yellow gown in BEAUTY & THE BEAST

Alice's "vision in blue" dress in You Can't Take It With You
Irene's "Alice Blue Gown"
Tevye's Prayer Shawl in Fiddler on the Roof
Charity's Black (or red) dress, top hat and cane in Sweet Charity
re: Iconic Costumes#42
Posted: 2/5/07 at 2:37pmAnnie's red dress? You know it's iconic when you're sick of looking at it. ;O )
re: Iconic Costumes#43
Posted: 2/5/07 at 2:49pmBecause they're based on the comics, I would say the costumes from You're A Good Man Charlie Brown are somewhat iconic, but only because they are a part of every production.

Julian, actually there can be a little variation in Charlie Brown, like Schroeder wears purple, but sometimes green, and while Charlie Brown usually has his yellow shirt, he sometimes wears red. Tiny bit of leeway.
Tevye's costume? What is Tevye's costume? He can be wearing anything really, as long as he has a necessary hat and talis (which all the adult men would have to wear).

Posted: 2/5/07 at 3:08pmWhat is interesting is that most of these "iconic" costumes come from another source such as a comic strip (Annie) or a Movie (Wizard of Oz).
re: Iconic Costumes#47
Posted: 2/5/07 at 3:11pmOr from the golden age, none really come from musicals that are that recent, unless they take something from a movie (Wicked)

How could no one mention the original Follies costumes!
The show girl costumes were unbelievable. Especially the costume the show girl wore when the curtain first rose for the prologue.
stunning.
