Iconic Costumes

re: Iconic Costumes#50

Posted: 2/5/07 at 6:48pm

ljay, I was going to include that, but if you look at photos of various productions, nobody particularly copies the designs the same and it looks very different each time.

What everybody CAN remember is that the showgirls costumes are absolutely stunning, but each production brings a new variety of different yet elegantly beautiful pieces. Even the famed 'Lucy and Jessie' dress that Alexis showed off has not even been recreated each time.

edit; re: Iconic Costumes

Although beautiful, the picture in Chapins book is very different of the opening Follies ghost.

When I read the title of this thread I immediately thought of Cassie's red dress in A Chorus Line. It really is iconic.

The sailor costumes in The Anything Goes number in Anything Goes. Every production I've ever seen has had them.

"If we don't live happily ever after at least we survive until the end of the week!" -Kermit the frog "I need the money... it costs a lot to look this cheap!" -Dolly P. "Oh please, Over at 'Gypsy' Patti LuPone hasn't even alienated her first daughter yet!" Mary Testa in "Xanadu" "...Like a drunk Chita Rivera!" Robin de Jesus in "In the Heights"

"B*tch, I don't know your life." -Xanadu After that if he still doesn't understand why you were uncomfortable and are now infuriated, kick him again but this time with Jazz Hands!!! -KillerTofu

The Phantom of the Opera's Tailsuit, Cloak, & Fedora (There's some personal bias here, but I think it looks really cool)

The Lion King's Animal Puppets & Masks

Belle's yellow ballroom gown from "Beauty and the Beast"

Annie's red dress

Jean Valjean's red & blue coat from "Les Miserables"

Jonart - Peter's dress was purple. Daly's and Lansbury's dresses were a deep red. And from what I can tell from the faded color pictures I've seen from the original production (which I didn't see) it looks like Merman was wearing something brownish. It's hard to tell color differences from photos.

Cheyenne Jackson tickled me. AFTER ordering SoMMS a drink but NOT tickling him, and hanging out with Girly in his dressing room (where he DIDN'T tickle her) but BEFORE we got married. To others. And then he tweeted Boobs. He also tweeted he's good friends with some chick on "The Voice" who just happens to be good friends with Tink's ex. And I'm still married. Oh, and this just in: "Pettiness, spite, malice ....Such ugly emotions... So sad." - After Eight, talking about MEEEEEEEE!!! I'm so honored! :-)

agreed joel.. and definitely maria's white dress with the red ribbon from WSS!

and i agree with mark's sweater and mimi's blue pants. that's the first thing i thought of.

i think of radamace's red-orangey outfit with the pants and open shirt.

and i agree with the belle thing.. but that's iconic because of the movie, not the broadway show.

oh and duh annie's red dress. poor kid, she's branded for life, ahah!

oh ahha, and i kind of think of the wet suits sky and the boys wear in mamma mia.. hehe.

and elphie's blue suit and galinda's pink popular dress. definitely.

OH! and mrs. anna's huge hoop dress in the king and i!

this is fun! =)

now that i think of it, every popular show has it's own iconic costumes!

(head in hands....shaking head....)

MOST of you are sooooo missing the point. can someone websters the definition of ICONIC...?

This is the definition for iconic:
of, pertaining to, or characteristic of an icon.

Over half the stuff people are posting are not iconic.

folks (the ones not getting this)- the idea here is costumes that EVERY production has an identical or nearly identical version of. Ergo The Lion king, Rent, wicked, phantom, hairspray etc. do not have costumes that count since they have only had one production (tours don't count since its essentially the same show, and north shore used the vega hairspray costumes so that doesn't fly either)

-maria's white dress with the red ribbon from WSS!

-mark's sweater and mimi's blue pants. that's the first thing i thought of.

-belle's yellow gown and blue jumper. though i still stand by what i said about it before.

-annie's red dress. poor kid, she's branded for life, haha!

-wicked witch black frock.

-mrs. anna's huge hoop dress in the king and i!

(now that i think of it, every popular show has it's own iconic costumes! ) <----- still think that.

any better? oy.

you're right, come to think of it, the last 37 regional productions of "rent" I saw the Mimi WAS wearing blue pants. Papermill, Northshore, TUTS, even London barn theater, all adorned their mimi's in those ICONIC blue pants.

Would it be iconic if they didn't even bother to use the costume in the movie version? Didn't they only use Mark's scarf in the movie, not the blue pants or plaid pants? Just a thought!

Mercades, I hope yer foot'll done heal in time. And I hope some folks'll done learned the difference between an "effective" costume and an "Iconic" one in that same time.

I also never understand why 27364823462384 people feel the need to post the same thing:

"Annie's red dress"
