Was expecting a defying gravity riff...
My father (AIDS)
My sister (AIDS)
My uncle and my cousin and her best friend (AIDS, AIDS, AIDS)
The gays and the straights
And the white and the spades

I didn't care for it. For me, that tempo isn't right for a national anthem. I think it needs a faster pace and a little less sweetness and light.

Finally watched it, thought she did a great job. This diva needs her stage... and she is certainly getting it!

Didn't she sing it live at the Major League Baseball thing last year?

I thought she did a great job! a cappella and live! ...I'm surprised at how many people are hating on it though? I really can't find much wrong with it. It's not perfect, nothing is, but people are really criticizing her.

^To be honest, I believe the ones criticizing are the same ones who really went all out berating Menzel about NYE. In other words, they're trying to pull anything "wrong" with it to prove they were right that she "can't sing live."
Now, there are some who are just saying they didn't like any riffing and wanted a straight anthem, but that's really rarely done these days in celeb book-ended events like this.
Menzel sang it live. Whitney Houston didn't. And Menzel sang it a cappella. Who else has done that at the Super Bowl? (I really don't know, just asking.)

If your headline is that someone didn't botch something, it seems like you pretty much came in with certain expectations... no matter how much backpedaling and supportive double-talk you fold in...

Good question about others singing it a capella ... I'd like to know as well.
I don't think she riffed that much, it seemed pretty simple with a few extra flourishes to me.
I thought this was interesting (from Sports Illustrated):
"If you were betting on the length of Idina Menzel's National Anthem at Super Bowl XLIX, you're out of luck.
Sportsbook has suspended the prop bet after it was suspected that an insider tipped off the length from Menzel's rehearsals. The over/under had been set at 122.5 seconds, and after Sportsbook suddenly took multiple max bets on the over, it figured something was up."

I like a good rhyme more than a good time

I didn't bother reading beyond the headline because it was clearly a typical shock title and entirely incorrect, given that Menzel did sing the national anthem before. And didn't botch it.
^Yes, I saw that the prop bet was canceled. Something about "insider information," funny.

Pootie2, Christina Aguilera did it live and a cappella in 2011.

Thanks, Tag. I looked that up, and...ouch, though the lyric flub didn't seem to permanently damage her career, at least with the other stuff in Wikipedia.

wow, just try to post a casual opinion. Not possible.
I simply didn't care for the rendition. It has nothing to do with anything else on this earth. I don't follow Idina, don't have her on a pedestal, don't hate her. It has nothing to do with anyone else on this earth who ever sang the national anthem. SHEESH!

I'm not seeing what you're overreacting to. ?
Edit: Oh, if you're talking about Broadwaydreaming's comments onwards, I'm rather positive we're referring to the direct Twitter and Facebook attacks that Menzel has been fielding about her performance. I didn't see anything like that in this thread, that's for sure.

The above whole diatribe is what I call overreacting.
Don't think so hard about others' opinions. It's not that important.

I think most people are criticizing the linked article moreso than anyone in here.

OK. It's probably past someone's bedtime, so I won't hold that blow-up against you, Jane2. Obviously you have no inkling what goes on outside of this board.

^ Not really. The article only talked about her few botched performances and did say she wasn't consistent live. All correct, valid points.

Well, then run along to bed now, toots.
And your last sentence - you have no idea what you're talking about but I won't hold it against you because I see where you're coming from - resorting to insults.

Yes, but my point was that Pootie2 was talking about the negativity in the article, AFAIK, and criticizing their negative approach, nothing to do with Jane2. Whereas Jane2 thought it was referring to her...
And, you can write correct valid points from a positive slant or a negative one... if your headline is that she finally didn't botch it, it doesn't seem a stretch to say that is intentionally negative to get all the Fanzels clicking and commenting.

Haterobics, those of us who have inklings of what goes on here know very well that a common problem on this board is the scarcity of respect for others' opinions.
