"So they'd have the cost of moving AND the cost of reconstructing a set?"
I'm pretty sure if it was going to move to ANY theatre, they would need a brand new set. Correct me if I'm wrong, I thought that was a union rule or something.

No, they would need to pay to have it modified, but it's not a union rule.

Posted: 7/29/10 at 1:15amThe logistics of transferring a set are not difficult. You gave the measurements of the stage and the measurements of the set. If the set won't fit, you modify it. If it fits, you don't modify it. You break the set down into pieces, load it into a truck, and move it in. Boom. Done.

You're forgetting we're not talking about just a set.
They also would bring the lighting package, and sound package.
"A truck?" Try several trucks.

Posted: 7/29/10 at 2:20amYes. I know more than one truck. That wasn't the point. And the set obviously includes lighting and sound equipment. It also includes props and costumes, if we're being specific here. And yes, I know lots of money. I was the first one to bring that up.

I didn't see Lambert on Oprah...guess he's not opposed returning to the stage.

Agreed TF4....too big a theater for a rock musical, a rock seems to be orientated for a younger or more specific group.
I thoug ht it very wise for BBAJ to book the B Jacobs theater and Scottsboro to do the same. Besides they are transferring from more intimate off-bway theaters to larger bway theaters.

I think the design for AI would be incredibly difficult to modify for a smaller space without a pretty extensive, pretty signficiant re-design. The union cost for transferring a production is huge. It would easily cost more than a million dollars to move the show to a smaller space. I doubt its worth it.
PS - Adam Lambert was the best Fyero I ever saw in WICKED. I definitely hope he returns to the stage at some point.

Cheaper to move a show, than close it, if AI can still do 700k in smaller size theatre, it would be worth it, remember it is only a static set and shows tend to hire lighting, so the show just hire more lighting, construct this while the St James production is playing and when AI moves out send the lighting back to the leasing company.
It was very common on Broadway for shows to transfer to different theatres, such as Fiddler on the Roof, 42nd Street, My Fair Lady, Les Miserable and South Pacific etc.

Sorry Theatreguy
Is that as good as it gets from you, just quote somebody and give no explanation?
#38Idiot to transfer?
Posted: 7/31/10 at 11:52pmIt is NOT, "very" common at all. It does happen, but not often.

Posted: 8/1/10 at 12:25amPhantom of London - the shows you mention belong to a different era in Broadway history when it was cheaper to transfer a show because union costs were less but also because sets were vastly less complicated then they are today. The original sets of My Fair Lady, South Pacific and Fiddler were mostly drops.
