I won't be upset when Hodge wins, but my vote would undoubtedly go to Sahr Nguajah for FELA! I don't understand how Hodge has all the buzz and Sahr has zero...his performance is unforgettable.
As for Gary Beach, I thought he was dreadful in that ****eous revival.
I am totally baffled by this... Hodge: straight?

That's what hit me first too jpbran. I legit thought he was gay.
I'm not the kinda gay who thinks everyone ELSE is, but after he signed our Playbills, he hurried away with the skinny twink waiting for him. Guess it was his... nephew. Oh well.

Color me surprised. I would guess it would be his son because IMDB says he's married with a kid.

I wouldn't mind Sean Hayes taking home the Tony :)
you have nominated and selected the winner, PalJoey.
Hope Newsweek writes a fantastic article on this thread...
I think learning that George Hearn is supposedly not gay was worth this thread.
So a man is seen out with a younger man and that means he is gay? Maybe it was actually his nephew!
If Douglas Hodge wins the Tony, I will be very happy. Hodge spearheaded the palpable chemistry that existed between the stage and the audience. I have rarely been in such an enthusiastic audience. Hodge was the main reason for that chemistry. He displayed humor, pathos, and a very decent singing voice. He deserves a Tony.
Douglas is quite overrated. If anyone deserves the Tony in LaCage that's Kelsey. Douglas has a horrible voice and his acting is underwhelming and repetitive.
LOVED Kelsey Grammer.
And really enjoyed this production.
My one complaint with Douglas Hodge is that he swallows many of the lyrics when he is singing, and in his affected performance doesn't delver many of the very clever lines.
But, I do find much about his performance to be touching.
The OCR is on of my all-time favorites. I loved that production and constantly have that CD on in my car. Singing along to 'Best of Times' is a great way to pass time on a road trip!
Couldn't care less if someone is gay, straight, or any other version of life. We are what we are.
I could actually care less... But if a middle-aged actor took off quickly after a show with a pouty-looking young lady, I'd probably assume he was straight. It goes both ways.
My REAL issue with Hodge is similar to what someone else said -- as much as I enjoyed his performance overall, I had to strain to hear a LOT of what he said. He got super quiet in parts, and almost mumbled in others.
Yes, there were quite a few parts where he does get real quiet as he speaks.
I thought he was very, very good. When I saw it in London last summer, he had all ready left the show.
Regardless of if he's straight or gay, back to the original poster of this thread, I ask you this question- what difference does it make?
"My REAL issue with Hodge is similar to what someone else said -- as much as I enjoyed his performance overall, I had to strain to hear a LOT of what he said. He got super quiet in parts, and almost mumbled in others"
Yes, that same thing happened to me. That, plus his accent made it hard for me to understand him.
It would be great if he won. He gives an excellent performance. He is hilarious and has a very pleasant singing voice. To all of you who don't want him to win, who do you want to win? The other options aren't amazing, but if someone else were to win, it should go to Chad Kimball. But go Mr. Hodge!
Now that some of you mention it, I do recall him being a little hard to understand at times. I was worried that I was just tired when I saw it, but everything else in the show drew me in. But, it was just moments where I didn't hear everything from Albin.
Yes, he was hard to understand. To answer your question, I'd be way more excited if Sean Hayes won, or Chad. But I loved Sean in his show the most. Hayes' singing is just ok, and he knows it's not his forte, but his acting and charisma onstage are undeniable, plus the way he commands the stage and the show altogether.
I totally get quizking101 point, as a London perspective. On the many occasions I saw the West End production, I found it mildly amusing that two straight men Douglas Hodge and Rodger Allam, played the role the best of a gay/camp character, as Albin/ZaZa, as opposed to two gay chaps who played the role Graham Norton and John Barrowman, who also played the role.
On the West End board Roger Allam was considered better than Douglas Hodge, even Ben Brantley enjoyed Roger's performance when he saw La Cage Aux Folles at The Playhouse Theatre.
I don't think Roger Allam was "considered better", as great as he was - but certainly the chemistry between him and Philip Quast was much stronger than that between Douglas Hodge and Denis Lawson, so overall I think the show worked better with the Allam/Quast pairing, even though in terms of individual performances Hodge was the better Albin. (Bit of a tortuous sentence there, sorry!)
I actually slightly preferred Roger Allam's performance to Hodge's but I didn't think I was part of a consensus. I do wonder though, if Allam had 'originated' the role at the Menier and Hodge had taken over, would it be Allam receiving plaudits, awards and international recognition? Regardless, he certainly has the better diction of the two - more plummy than cockney.
Oh, I definitely agree about his diction - Allam's is one of the best (speaking) voices on the London stage IMO. His delivery of the lines like "The cat is out of her baggage" was perfect. Very much a "stately homo"!
Funnily enough, Allam was actually offered the part of Georges at the Menier but he wasn't available so Philip Quast got it. I'm not sure that he really has the right voice for Georges' ballads - and in the end Quast was just perfect in that role.
Even if he had been cast as Albin originally, I'm not sure Allam would have stuck with the show as long as Hodge has - he doesn't seem particularly interested in doing a long run in one show. He even left the original cast of Les Mis early because he was offered another job, and that was in the '80s when he was even less known than he is now.

SOMEBODY CALL RAMIN SETOODEH
He did win it! But it now that I see it, it would have been nice if Chad Kimball won. Congrats to them all.
