Xanadu is an "unpopular" nominee? says WHO?? the Broadway World Message Board posters?
you know, there is a real world outside of this board... filled with people who actually loved Xanadu.
I know it's not selling very well, but it's an extremely popular musical (once people actually go see it). It's just SO much fun and a good escape!
It also may be based on the movie but as a whole, it has a very nice original feel to it. It's refreshing. At least for me it was.
Remember the 1999 best musical nominations?
Things ain't so bad.
1999? And they were? lol
But seriously, Xanadu did take what is considered a horrific movie and make it into a absolutely loving tribute.
And as much as I liked Avenue Q... if it can win then we should embrase all the shows.... not every show will be everyones taste. THANK GOD

Yes - the BWW posters.
Grease has a higher percentage of filled seats than Xanadu. It dosen't mean anybody here loves it or hates it - but it dosen't seem to have unanimous rave reviews on this board.
Regarding Xanadu - I based my observation on the title of the thread - if they wrote Gypsy I would have said the same thing.
'99 was:
It Ain't Nothin But The Blues
Fosse
Parade
The Civil War
Best New Musical:
The Civil War
Fosse
It Ain't Nothing But the Blues
Parade
I actually saw all those shows. YES. It was a bad year too... I thought the only decent on was PARADE at the Beaumont. CIVIL WAR was pretty bad! Chris was even upset at me bec. I dragged him to that mess at St. James Theater, which according to him~the best part of the musical was Lincoln's letter.
It Aint Nothing is like jazz revue, so with FOSSE- which had a try out at Boston's Colonial-I thought those two musicals are not REALLY MUSICALS!
Even the Revival was mediocre- Annie Get Your Gun won that year!
btw- Calvin- How do you know this? youre not even as old as me? lol...you know I am 35 yrs old! ~always!!!

I was a mere lad of 20.
I will admit its a bad year this year overall! we have soo many musicals - 8 in total ( I am including GLORY DAYS)
The last time we had a good year was 1998~ LION KING, RAGTIME, SIDE SHOW with the exception of SCARLETT PIMPERNELL...
Damn! I just remember Frank Wildhorn making musicals every year~ I am glad he stopped! lol!

"you know, there is a real world outside of this board..."
... or New York City.
Don't forget 1995. Only two nominees that year: SUNSET BOULEVARD and SMOKEY JOE'S CAFE.
"It would be the end of the Tony telecast, because the award is given at the end!" --- blaxx
High five, blaxx *lol*
No, it most certainly would not mean the end of Broadway.
Things such as egos like those that caused YF not to be nominated, strikes, contracts with unions, ect are the only things I see as potential Broadway slayers.
And remember this: AVE Q won a Tony. Broadway didn't die or even sputte after that.
1995 really sucks! they had that freakin' TONY show at the Minskoff!

1994 is a good year too- WICKED, AVENUE Q, CAROLINE or CHANGE & BOY FROM OZ.
and my favorite....TABOO! and they even made a movie about that season..
Everyone thinks WICKED is going to win..I was soo glad that AVENUE Q won...I cant stand WICKED~ and I even have to see it twice! in NYC and LA (with my mom)
All my friends in Boston keep asking me... Are you going to see WICKED at the Opera House? One day I lost it...and I told them...You knwo what-- IT SUCKS!!!! and i just realized that was mean.. they are not really theater queen like us.. they dont know any better~there just average homosexuals! my bad!

2004 jay!
We're not THAT old.
Well. Were old compare to some posters here like 15, 16 yrs old.
Oh my god! I could be a parent to them already! I actually just realized this when we were watching "13". Those kids are 13-15 yrs old. Chris & I have been together since 1994 (College days) and we have a 13 yr old cat...
Technically~ if Chris & I had kid back in 1995 (of course, IF we can procreate?) he or she would be 13 yrs old now!
I am soo Fantine already...I cant do Eponine anymore!

If Contact won in 2000, it doesn't mean the end of Broadway.
There were not much choices in 2000.
WILD PARTY was a disaster and that Toni Collette was not very nice at the stage door! I mean -she was a B*** !

And what I have found is that even people who were resistent to seeing it the first time, once hooked, they become repeaters.
"Regarding Xanadu - I based my observation on the title of the thread - if they wrote Gypsy I would have said the same thing."
I can't believe people actually are taking this seriously.
This entire thread was nothing but small part of a large TONY thread spam rush yesterday. It wasn't really meant to inspire legitimate discussion. I mean, "the end of Bway"? Come on peeps!
But on the other hand, I absolutely LOVE that it has elicited such rational and irrational conversation. It does make for a good read.
Oh, and Cal, speaking of TONY - are we going to see you naked in the "bare" issue?
Guys-
They are just making a joke, okay! besides Tazber is cute..so he is on our side!
J*
Ha, I don't know yet taz, but I highly doubt it. Muscle boys always win.
and YES. Its the END of the WORLD!
......its coming from me, so I am just jokin'. hello! I am a fANADu!
and on the serious note : XANADU will NOT win the TONYS.. IN THE HEIGHTS would!

It seems like just yesterday when a Jersey Boys ( not a jutebox musical) win would be the end of Broadway. Maybe it was. Maybe it explains Spring Awakening.
The last time we had a good year was 1998~ LION KING, RAGTIME, SIDE SHOW with the exception of SCARLETT PIMPERNELL
If you reverse the last two shows, I would agree. I loved The Scarlet Pimpernel. Even more than *gasp* Ragtime, which had the best score of the season, but was something of a mess on stage.
