If Passing Strange wins, it will be the end of Broadway.
If In The Heights wins, there will be no excitement or buzz.

Plain and simple, it will only be the end of Broadway if Cry-Baby wins Best Musical.

Short of a nuclear attack when every theatre is decimated, NOTHING, NO ONE SHOW, NO ONE AWARD is going to mean the end of Broadway. This nonsense has been spouted about eternally when something didn't go to someone's liking. Read your history and shaddup already. Broadway is here to stay. PERIOD.

Dayum, kids...CTFO.
I love "Xanadu"--it's clever, beautifully performed, funny and plans to go back for a fourth time show my affection for it--but it is not rocket science.
Sarcastially intended or not, a win would not signal the end of Broadway...it might show how slim the field was this year if a lightweight lark of a show, however well-done, can rule the roost.
If "Xanadu" wins the Tony for Best Musical they will be playing "I'm Alive" on the big screen on Broadway & New York will be the happiest place on earth '... and the world shines for me today'

YOU TELL 'EM, ED!!!! Broadway will thrive and survive, and... stay alive... uh... number five... uh... da... umm... Rodeo Drive... uh.. my Uncle Clive...whatever.
All I'm trying to say is it will never die. And I was NOT being sarcastic, and neither were you, Ed.
Actually Grey Gardens not winning Best Musical last year was the end of Broadway and we all have survived quite nicely. We will persevere.
Nah......you guys said the same thing about Idina winning, about Avenue Q winning, the Pajama Game winning, David Hyde Pierce winning......
Xanadu winning would just be the beginning! It's smart, and a loving tribute to the genre of musical theater. Passing Strange is a self-indulgent to the writer himself, as if to say, look how great I am, I am Stew, and completley too esotaric to be commercially successful. Xanadu winning would be great, because it embodies everything that a musical should be, an escape from reality, even if only for a little bit.

It won't be the end of Broadway, but it WILL be the END OF THE WORLD!

I thought DHP winning the Tony over Raul was the end? Or was it LaChanze over Patti? I keep forgetting.
Now, if GREASE wins...

Me? What did I do? I didn't deprive the GODLIKE Cheyenne Jackson, certainly THE MOST STUNNING PERFORMER IN THE HISTORY of Broadway of his god-given Tony award nomination! I didn't deprive Mary Testa and What's-her-face of their nominations, either, despite the fact that the two of them give the comedic performances of the CENTURY and moved Jeff Lynne to TEARS with their flawless rendition of "EVIL WOMAN," easily the greatest song of the rock era.
Personally, I hoping Xanadu will win. Not because I liked the show so much as to see the meltdown of hundreds of musical theatre snobs that will likely incur. But if Xanadu doesn't win, I'm hoping somehow Urinetown or The Scarlet Pimpernel can still take a belated Best Musical award posthumously.
But if none of those win the award this year, then yes, Broadway will simply no longer exist. I predict it will become a endless void immediately following the moment the winner is announced. I just hope the NYPD has enough flares on hand.
I really hope Xanadu wins, it's the little show that could!
I love this thread. Thank you for starting it taz.
you're welcome taz, always glad to entertain.
Ooh, taz, that was cool. Kinda like when Jekyll starts singing to himself at the end of J&H, when they got rid of the mirror thing.
oh. The "Confrontation", calvin?
what a great moment in the show... ESPECIALLY if you got to see David Hasselhoff do it and believe me, I did. what a treat. haha
It's great acting. If you look one direction, you're good. If you look the other, you're evil. Genius!
Almost as good as the differentiation of twin brothers in "Dying City." Gay bro smiles. Straight bro looks mad. OK, I was, like, the only one who didn't like that show.
Ponytail! No ponytail!
Which hairstyle will ultimately win out???

It dosen't matter what wins, in my opinion.
Even if the trend of Broadway continues to turn to the ways of Revivals and "Jukebox Musicals" - there will always be somebody who wants to write something new and original. There may not be as many new works, but there will always be something.
I also don't feel that the Tony's make that big of an impact on shows - yes it may boost ticket sales for a particular show, but the face of the matter is that if a show wins that is not a good show, they will still close - and producers will continue to look for better shows.
Just my thoughts - and I'm not saying Xanadu or Grease or any of the other unpopular nominees are bad - just saying it as a general comment.
