I remember someone FREAKING out when it was suggested that Audra play Eliza, claiming that the role must be white! They then went on to create their version of a 'nightmare' cast consisting of Audra, Stokes as Higgins and Ben Vereen as Alfie Dolittle.
And I thought, 'DAMN! I'd pay $100 to see that' (though I'd put in Morgan Freeman instead of Stokes).

I really love how some have to post "in color blind casting".
What exactly would be the problem of having her play Eliza in MFL. Not only would she be a supurb choice, but a whole new meaning would be brough to the class seperation issue. And good for Wonderful Town. And for Lilly in Kiss Me, Kate. And Belle in BATB. And Annie Oakley in AGYG. And Maria in Sound of Music. And Laurie in Oklahoma.
And she can't play Mary Poppins? Cause Poppins is WHITE?

I think she'd be good as Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd
and
Desiree or Charlotte in A Little Night Music......she could really be a good Charlotte if Brian Stokes Mitchell was Carl Mangus Malcolm.

All of these suggestions are good so far. But, and not to be racist at all, Little Night Music is a white show. It's just inherent in the characters, the location and the time period. In a concert setting I'd love to hear her sing some of those songs though. However I do think she is wrong for the Countess.

Carl Magnum--when I did A Little Night Music, we had a black woman, black man (no, they were not playing opposite each other), and a hispanic guy. Why does it have to be a "white show"?

It takes place in Sweden, number one. And the time period dictates an era where no Black man was made a count. I could see a consession being made for the Lieberschlieders, but that's it. The main characters in this musical need to be white. It's like asking, Why is Fences a Black show?

Well I see the point of saying it is a "White Show" and that it's unrealistic, but so was Audra playing Grace in Annie and I wouldn't give that Maybe/Tomorrow moment up for anything in the world.

Wait . . . . I think there's another post on this board that says Nicole Kidman is playing Elphie in the movie version of "Wicked" . . . . wouldn't Audra be a GREAT Galinda opposite Nicole in the movie . . . just a thought.

How interesting that I was just having this discussion with one of my friends today (as she rolled her eyes at my having yet another, in actuality, single person conversation about Audra). Read my signature. I think I would pay to see her wash laundry, as long as she was humming while she did it. Hell I would pay to see her just sit and stare off into space as well.

How sad and revolting to read that ALNM is a "white show".
Guess what, CarlM..so is LES MIZ..and guess what...they've cast minorities (not just African Americans) in the show. I guess since there were no Phillipinos in 18th century France, so you wouldn't be able to watch the show and wince in pain. Since it's a white show.
And, CarlM, thank god we only have people of the same race (as the original real life character) playing their role.

Ditto on the staring into space thing. I've only seen her on tv and heard her on Cds. I can't even imagine her live!
