re: 'Imagine This' No More

What I think is quite sad is that the controversial (in a bad way) and ultimately 'failed musical' Imagine This is going to be seen as a blot on the CV's of the creative team, despite the amazing work that went into it. Shiki Levy deserves an award for that show, as do the designers, choreographers and, most importantly, the cast. It's just such a shame the whole premise of it was sh*t from the start... all that fantastic work wasted on a horrendous pig's arse of a show.

Glenn Benenbeim should be shot.

I thought the curse went to the Novello. Drowsy, Into the Hoods, DSS anyone?
In regards to 'Imagine This' from what I saw on that little video box that keeps appearing on BWW it deserved a much better run than this. This truly is unfortunate, an all-new original musical finally hits London, and what does it do? Goes ahead and flops! Well that's showbiz for ya! Looks like the British public no longer care for originality, so to join the crowd, I say bring back Gypsy! :P

Yes it was original; yes it was all-new...

BUT IT STILL WASN'T VERY GOOD!

Not as bad as Gone with the Wind and there were some brilliant moments in it (the sets and lighting were top-notch), but I felt that Masada material dragged the whole thing down (somewhat ironically seeing as it was the Warsaw Ghetto setting which had been 'shoe-horned' in).

The theatre was maybe a little less than a third full on Friday, with some not returning after the interval.

'Narrow minded critics are to blame fro the rapid closure of 'Imagine This'.
-claims the shows producer, Beth Trachtenberg quoted in the press today.
'Night after night we have seen audiences stirred to the depths of their emotions by the show. Fundamentally, I do not think the critics should be making a moral judgment over the subject matter and moreover that they are generally not prepared to embrace musicals.
I've witnessed the publics response to the show that is directly opposed to the narrow minded critical belief that musicals are limited in their emotional impact to deal with meaningful subject matter in a powerful and sensitive manner'.

I know the reviews for this have been plain horrid, but really how much can we blame critics for its demise? I mean if the audience each night have been so overwhelmed and all, surely this would have gotten more word-of-mouth publicity?

I mean some musicals have gotten atrocious reviews (think Les Mis) and have survived. Imagine This just doesn't sell and frankly, really really bad timing for a launch of a new musical. "ooh let's watch a musical to lighten our spirits during this credit crunch!" "ooh, let's watch a musical set in Warsaw ghetto!" Just doesn't cut it.

I could never envisage 'imagine this' playing too long after its critical dubbing.

I only now can guess this will leave the path clear for the critically acclaimed Meniers 'A little night music'?

I'd give my right arm (for a week's lease-hold, or something) for Parade at the New London. That too would make my year.
The rain we knew is a thing of the past -
deep-delving, dark, deliberate you would say
browsing on spire and bogland; but today
our sky-blue slates are steaming in the sun,
our yachts tinkling and dancing in the bay
like racehorses. We contemplate at last
shining windows, a future forbidden to no one.

Beth Trachtenburg is a total c*nt. Listening to her bullsh*t the Radio 4 website made me want to punch my own head in.

I think How to Succeed would be amazing at the New London. I adored it at Chichester and the New London has a similar, slightly better stage. Plus I just love that show.

Woo I love my friends, I'm seeing this on saturday (hopefully!) =)

re: 'Imagine This' No More

I can't remember ever being less surprised.

That venue needs a party-atmosphere show- like Five Guys Named Moe, A Slice of Saturday Night oir the Blues Brothers. Or a revival of Cats, with Grizabella cast on TV. (Yep, you can buy that idea off me for a few quid Lord A)

The whole press crap that is hitting the pages in the last two days is not looking good for that mouthy producer. Lets hope she doesn't get another chance anytime soon. to mouth off like that about the national critics ain't a smart move lady!

Does Imagine This do student discount for on the day? Looking to go maybe on Monday.

re: 'Imagine This' No More

hey musical-matt, the song list's pretty much similar to the concept recording although be very afraid of Simon Gleeson's butchering of the song 'Hail'. Be. very.afraid.

As for merch: I saw t shirts, cups, the programme had a weird front cover and I bought a badge. You can put your name down for the cast recording, if it's ever going to be released.

Beth Trachtenberg is coming off as a sore loser seriously. I don't know if she's trying to increase publicity by taking the "come judge for yourselves and stop listening to those darn critics" line, but it seriously compromises her rep.

re: 'Imagine This' No More

Actually an addendum the prior...I can get a *lot* of free tickets for this (like 8-10 per show). Would there be any interest in an impromptu BWW gathering for, say, the closing?

re: 'Imagine This' No More

I'm also thinking about going to the last night but would need to know fairly soon, as I would like to book a ticket for the matinee of August that day.
