If I'm sober enough to type, I might attempt a review Friday night -- I have a feeling this show is going to drive me to drink.

Margo -
I've been gone a long time. Show info, dates, cast, etc?
Thanks!
I'll be in town on Mon/Tues - maybe it'll still be open! I always love to witness some good ol' rotten theatre.

Posted: 9/28/05 at 5:07pmI still cherish having seen Thou Shalt Not. I really wish I could be there for In My Life, though I doubt it will top the West End's recent notorious flop, Behind the Iron Mask, which curiously enough, just released a cast recording. The show was universally hated and musical theatre fans flocked to the show just to see if it was as abominally horrendous as the rumors purported it to be knowing the opportunity to witness the show would be few by the time the first few previews had played. It was so bad, in fact, that heckling from the audience became the norm during most of its short-lived run.

i actually liked the broadway.com video. i think its a really sweet story, and the title song has gotten A LOT better from the sampler, now that its a duet. if anything else, its a cute story (i always love stories like this, lol). but i am my mothers son, the few seconds on the video drive me crazy, luckily i havent heard the whole thing
i am excited to hear reviews, and i really want to know how christopher hanke (i believe thats his name) will play the tourettes, very extreme or very subtle? hmm, i guess ill hear from all of you.

In My Life....
She has burst like the music of angels, the light of the sun!
Damn you, robbiej! Now I'm going to have a parade of Les Miz goodies going through my head all day. I need a bit of noise to quench the endless string of Boublil-Schoenberg melodies currently broadcasting through my cranial radio...
*pulls out In My Life sampler CD*
Ok, that did it.

I am also at the first preveiw, I saw the cast Yesterday as I was going to DRS and they seem not to be holograms, so my hope that the show was "virtual" is now lost.
The show sounds like a joke that everyone gets, except the creative team. The Broadway.com video made me more excited about seeing it, but even more than the sampler seems to prove they have no grasp of the material.
Does Brooks really think this is the most "touching, unlikely" premise for a love story ever, rather than a premise for a really bad, and rather dirty, joke?

I just read the plot synopsis.
His tourettes?
God on a bicycle?
A CPA who wants to direct God's first reality opera?
Why do I have to live in Los Angeles? I miss all the good stuff.

Ya know...I don't mind a quirky, semi-precious story. I was one of three people that actually adored Amour.
But all of the music released to the public thus far seeming shockingly mundane for a quirky tale. It should be fascinating!
OH...and if I were to write a song called 'I AM MY MOTHER'S SON', it would be about how I'm a loud WOP who wields guilt like sword and can burst into hysterics at a moment's notice.

I'm seeing the show on Friday as a guest of one of the actors. Everyone involved admits the show is troubled and that the writer/director/composer is reluctant to make necessary changes.
That said -- don't expect this show to be the laugh riot camp fest that made shows like CARRIE and PRINCE OF CENTRAL PARK such delightful schmatz fests.
Per my friend in the cast, IN MY LIFE is incredibly somber. There are basically no uptempo songs in the entire show.
It may end up being a flop, but is almost certain to not be a lively one.

Posted: 9/29/05 at 12:01pmMB, that is what seems to make it so bad, the idea that Brooks seems to think it is the deepest, most important piece of work that ever existed. If they were in on the joke I think I might really like it, its the music's somber schmaltzyness that makes it unpaleteable.

Well I remember Paul Chiara, the composer of SHOGUN THE MUSICAL said that he had written the most important musical since SHOWBOAT.
But even that show had that dildo scene and the butterfly ballet to keep it campy and entertaining. My guess is that IN MY LIFE will probably just be really boring.

Posted: 9/29/05 at 12:09pmoh man. i was looking forward to another campy flop like Carrie...i'll be very upset if i'm just bored for 2 hours.

Posted: 9/29/05 at 12:10pmSo am I to assume from your comments, MB, that the dancing lemons have been cut?
#45re: In My Life First Preview! (9/30/05)
Posted: 9/29/05 at 12:13pmI'm hoping for unintentional camp, maybe since the actors know the mess, they can throw in something to entertain us.

I don't know anything about dancing lemons Sueleen, but if my friend is to be believed, they would dance to a very SLOW song.
